here in the USA, most all of us are children of immigrants.   It is considered acceptable to say you're Italian if you have ancestors from Italy.

Me, I'm German, Irish, Scottish, English and French.   I have ancestors who came to the US as recently as 4 generations ago (1853) and as far back as 13 generations ago (Jamestown Colony, 1620).

This is what is annoying about America! why do you have to be African American? everyone can see your ethnic origins, why can't an American just be an American? Bob has already stated that he is an American so he got it right ;)
