Movies you would advise everybody to see
« on: February 22, 2007, 01:00:05 PM »
For me, i recently saw "La Meglio Gioventù" (The Best of Youth). An italian movie, 6 hours long, about the life of 2 brothers in Italy. It made a deep impact on me, can't really explain it, but it's a masterpiece imo.

It also gives a good impression about life in italy, about how to deal with family, with life in general, ...
Girls, also expect to shed some tears.

(no spoilers in this link)

For the girls and gays onhere, this guy also plays in it

Thanks for the heads up Faust... 6 hours!!!  :)

One that I saw a few months ago has stuck with me ever since, and think it does a fine job of interpreting what war can do to a man.  It's called Brodre... a Swedish flick. (Brothers in English) It's not new, but def worth a rental

The one brother is a great guy, has a good career in the military, amazing wife, kids, house, etc... when he goes off to Afghanistan on a UN mission,  disaster happens and he's declared MIA.  Suddenly the loser brother, ex-con, drinker, smoker, unemployed all-around bad boy suddenly starts hanging out with the widow and his life undergoes a transformation...   the first brother is found alive and freed from an ordeal as a prisoner of the Afghani's, he comes home with a terrible secret in his heart.

It was a really interesting take on the horrors of war, also very interesting to get another perspective (when would you ever get to talk to a Swede) and by the time you get to the dramatic arc, you really don't know what your opinion should be.

Nicholas Nickleby

It was weird watching The Departed.  It was filmed with a lot of my hometown "Boston" and so many verbal references to place I know so very well.

But DAYUM it was quite a movie.

Departed is OK at best, highly overrated due to the director and cast, jack nicholson sucks (in this film) and was not convincing enough, Leo and mark wahlberg were fantastic...6/10

:o I just got back from the store and I almost picked up the Illusionist. It was on the counter in a POP display
I saw Edward Norton on the cover of the DVD and was about to buy it, ...but then thought I've been blowing too much money lately so I didn't. I figured if Edward Norton is in it, it would be an exceptional performance.
If I'd known it was a romantic movie, ...I would have gotten it. I'm a sucker for a good romantic movie.  :-[
