From my limited medical knowledge high BP is probably the #1 kidney killer. The high pressure damages the delicate nephrons which are your filtering unit of the kidney.
Diuretics are harsher in the short term but I would think walking around for months and years with very high blood pressure is far worse and much more common. You have your over the counter pain killers as well..
I think your kidneys can withstand a certain amount and then they just give out if you aren't careful...I am guessing here that you can survive pro bbing you just have to be hardcore when it comes to diet (keeping bodyfat low year round and watching sodium intake year round) and also NEVER drink alcohol or take pain killers unless you HAVE to have them and even then, only for short duration. Guys like Dorian and Ronnie survived just fine and I would imagine this is due in part to their insane work ethic not only in the gym but the kitchen as well. Both relied on insanely strict diets which allowed them to get in contest shape without abusing stimulants fat burners thyroid drugs dnp etc etc.
I am guessing here but it's the guys who take everything under the sun to get in shape who are at the greatest risk. High dose anabolics, kidneys are ok. Add in some diuretics for a few shows, kidneys are stressed but still ok. Feel me? But take high dose anabolics, diuretics, feed in high blood pressure long term, lots of unhealthy bodyweight and sky high salt intake, pain killers and presto kidney disease is almost a foregone conclusion.
Makes me wonder how many NPC guys are ticking time bombs since, from what I hear, nowadays guys are taking insane amounts of shit just to turn pro. The lack of work ethic and toil for years on end will manifest itself soon for many I am sure...and I certainly hope that I am wrong, but the evidence I see says otherwise...
