Flex/MD duel not as close as people think
« on: March 03, 2007, 08:58:17 PM »
My brother works at DistributionNet USA.
I got the inside scoop on all the various magazine circulations of actual bodybuilding mag sales

These are the actual numbers for Dec of 2006:

Muscle and Fitness 428,000
Flex 102,000
MuscleMag 51,000
Muscular Development  41,000
Ironman 39,000
Planet Muscle 29,000

I guess the "duel" in the eyes of bodybuilding fans doesn't really translate in the market.  It's a bloodbath.  Weider moved 530k units (M&F and FLEX) in December.  THIRTEEN times what MD did.  interesting...

I subscribe to MD.  I guess they are way too hardcore to compete with the other mags at the magazine stand.

Thanks for the numbers.

But quite frankly, it's only among bodybuilding fans that any confusion to the contrary could ever have arisen.

Go into any supermarket in Nowheresville, Iowa and see which they have on the magazine rack.

Interesting that M&F is most of the "weider" circulation.  I thought "Flex" was their flagship mag.  Isn't M&F more of a "fitness" mag going after the mainstream than a bodybuilding mag now anyway?

If you compare just Flex to MD, it's a lot closer.

M&F has excellent production value and appeals to a mainstream group, so i'm not surprised they're at 430k.

Is MD always this far behind FLEX, or was it just that month?

So, does anyone think they might be able to accurately calculate what each is making, you know, considering expenses and advertising and whatnot?

Any second now the entire MD staff will take time away from its busy schedule of running a non existant/non factor bodybuilding message board and swoop in with a MD circulation number of around 980,000 and swear on a stack of bibles the numbers are off, your cousin is lying and MD has Flex on the run....

This is an easy one to calculate... MD is only in the US...

M&F is of course the crossover... there are fitness and bodybuilding people in it... Everyone gets something they like... plus M&F has sections relating to gadgets, food, and the like. There are also sections for women. Do they still have M&F "for her"? Does that calculated as well?

Flex is the hardcore mag and has a much bigger following than MD.

There is no question in my mind that these numbers are accurate... if they are not, then they are a very good representation of the market.

Keep in mind that subscriptions are probably not calculated here.

You don't think so? Really? I dunno, I always bought ironman last... Musclemag seems to be doing well though.

What exactly does DA do for MD? Does he have a column? I've never read it if he does... When did it start?

I dunno.  I've seen him in ads, and on their forum.  Never *in* the magazine though.
