Oh Chick - Captain America has passed away...

Report: Captain America dies on the page

NEW YORK - Captain America has undertaken his last mission — at least for now.

The venerable superhero is killed in the issue of his namesake comic that hit stands Wednesday, the New York Daily News reported. On the new edition's pages, a sniper shoots down the shield-wielding hero as he leaves a courthouse.

It ends a long run for the stars-and-stripes-wearing character, created in 1941. Over the years, some 210 million copies of Captain America comic books, published by New York-based Marvel Entertainment Inc., have been sold in 75 countries.

But resurrections are not unknown in the world of comics, and Marvel Entertainment Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada said a Captain America comeback wasn't impossible.

Still, the character's death came as a blow to co-creator Joe Simon.

"We really need him now," said Simon, 93, who worked with artist Jack Kirby to devise Captain America as a foe for Adolf Hitler.

The superhero was spawned when a scrawny arts student named Steve Rogers, ineligible for the army because of his poor health but eager to serve his country, agreed to a "Super Soldier Serum" injection. The substance made him a paragon of physical perfection, armed only with his shield, his strength, his smarts and a command of martial arts.

In the comic-book universe, death is not always final. But even if Captain America turns out to have met his end in print, he may not disappear entirely: Marvel is developing a Captain America movie.

what in the hell?  This version of Captain America is Steve Rogers, he was the original who was created in the 40's.  The character was "frozen" in an iceberg or something until the 60's when he was revived and made a member of the avengers.  I don't believe there ever was a black Cap.  There was a time in the late 80's where steve rogers quit and was replaced by a guy who would eventually go on to be a character named USAgent and Rogers would reclaim his title.

Cap had a sidekick in the 40's named Bucky....I think there was a black version of that character somewhere along the line.

marvel tried to make a movie for Cap-and the fantastic four for that matter in the early 90's, both movies were so bad they were never even released to video-there are some clips up on youtube of these and they are baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad.

oh he'll come back. his series will continue after his death, and i'm pretty sure that this event is just a red herring after Civil War crossover. in comic book world, one big event leads to another big event, which leads to smaller consequences and eventually the preview big events are pushed aside for the next big event. this death of captain america thing is just another ongoing story to be used a device to get the Marvel Universe back in order again, then he'll come back months later. you'll see

I think you mean the Green Lantern.

There is no way in hell America in 1941 wold have a black man as a superhero, let alone one named Captain America.

Yes, I wasted my life reading comic books...

I remember the first one. Tyrone Jones. AKA...'Captain Kintay'.
