I went to church today
« on: March 25, 2007, 01:03:24 PM »

Today was 'testimony meeting' and one woman stood up and declared her disappointment for her children who had chosen 'not to live the gospel' and then expressed thanks (to her heavenly father) for her children who had chosen to follow the gospel.

I turned to my wife and said, "What a bitch - I can't believe she said that. I would never seek to degrade my kids like that in front of the entire congregation."

Naturally, the wife tried to make excuses for this chick, but I said, "No way - some things are kept in-house".

They're Mormon and 'live the gospel' is one of their big catch phrases.

I've been to a few church things in my time and all they do is declare disappointment at people that don't follow their religion...

whats the difference tre?

They? If you're in church there, are you not Mormon as well?

I go, because she takes my daughter there.

Who she? Your wife? So your Mormon wife married a Non Mormon?

Highly unusual.

That woman who was voicing her disappointment, was in effect not following the gospel herself. remember judge not least ye be judged? She should practice that.

I mean honestly, unless they're dealing drugs or have killed someone, how do you throw your teenage kids under the bus like that?  Fuck, she's fully aware of how judgmental those people are and how it's jacked up her own life.

And then there was the grandmother who stood up and announced that she has flaws and hopes that her grandkids (who were in the audience) realize that 'their Nana loves them very much, but she also loves her heavenly father' and hopes they don't let her flaws deter them from 'living the gospel'.

I was like...WTF??  A jacked-up grandma??!!

My (methodist) grandmother was perfect in every way.  Other than telling me that one of my girlfriends was ugly (lol), she never committed a sin in her life!

'live the gospel' is one of their big catch phrases.
But do you know what they mean by it?  I mean, as far as I know the gospel has to do w/what Christ did.....not something WE do.

1 Corinthians 15:1-9

The Resurrection of Christ

Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.
For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.

For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. Whether, then, it was I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed.

The "gospel" is about grace from God and what He did for us....not what we do or how we live "it."

Tre, Mormons believe they are Christians but according to the bible they would not fit the biblical description of a Christian.  One basic belief in Christianity is that the person believes Jesus Christ is God.  I'm pretty sure Mormons do not believe this.

Can you ask your wife what is meant by "living the gospel?"

For them, it means reading 'the scriptures' and trying to be more like Christ in their daily lives.

They believe that God used to be a living, breathing man who lived on Earth, who died and was then promoted or 'exalted' to god-status.  Apparently there are some hardcore regular Christians who believe the same or something similar, but for that to be true, wouldn't man have to have existed before God?  Does not compute.

Mormons aren't really big fans of the regular bible.  They use it, but only as much as necessary to make outsiders think that theirs is a bible-based religion.  After all, if you're a church doing business in America, it means more money for you if you can point to biblical linkage in your teachings.

In their opinion, however, the Book of Mormon is more perfect than the Bible, because the Bible has been through too many translations, thereby damaging or distorting the word of God.  They argue that Joseph Smith gave them the same BoM translation in 18-whatever that they read from today.

most mormon chicks i knew were umm..morally casual if you catch my drift.  Find a different church.  A non denominational one if you want. Or a religion that has been around for more than 150 years.   ;D

oh and please ask them to stop knocking on my door..unless they are chicks.  Thanks

Most of the mormon missionary chicks are not hot.

There are plenty of hot women in their religion, but most of those don't do the mission thing.

A friend of mine tried a new tactic on them. He answers the door to them in his underwear clutching a bottle of liquor.

So far, he tells me it has been effective. They seem to leave quite quickly :D

I was a missionary for two years in Venezuela- I would have cracked up if someone had done that to me.  The best part would have been the reaction of my companion- I worked with a few guys who were really sheltered before going out, and they probably would have had a silent fit.

I did have a chick who we were teaching who had a 4 year old who was still breastfeeding.  Whenever he'd bug her, she's whip one out and pop it in his mouth.  He'd nurse standing up with one elbow on her leg.  The hardest part was that she'd leave them out for a while in case he wanted to come back.  Keeping eye contact was TOUGH.
