Maintenence calorie opinions
« on: March 28, 2007, 02:27:59 AM »
Now just about every rmr , bmr + activity calculators ive used be it lean mass , total weight etc etc

all say i should be on just over 3000 cals a day.......

i eat about 2000 a day and just feel if i was eating 1000 more cals a day just to maintain id blow up like a marshmellow in the microwave!

Would my metabolism just be crap cos ive been eating so far under 'suggested maintenence' for so long , or would it speed up and level out if i built up to 3000?

OR do u guys also disagree with these calculators in the fact that they are far too high for someone thats not an Ecto........

Im 6 foot , 191 lb's , 12% bf

Play hockey , 2 practices a week , have a retail job with practically no sitting , walk about an hour a day via travel/lunch break

lift weight 2 times a week full body.

Bullshit, they dont work.

Fuck the counting of calories, you have to try it out.

I can grow on 2000 calories very well.

definately agree with this - it is a trial and error thing. I blew up like mad this winter and have now cut cals by a third to trim down - i dont know why people try and make it so complicated - if you are maintaining a weight on 2000, then you will add weight on 2500 or lose weight on 1500

Yes, and if you cycle carbs a bit, you can keep your fat in check too.

...just wasnt sure on the whole idea of how your metabolism can be slowed down if u eat far less than 'required' for too long....or if thats just a myth even.....

I dont think its a myth but i think if you are talking 500 calories either way it wont make much difference - if you starved yourself then maybe

No that's true. when you don't provide enough calories, your body changes into 'starvation mode' and tries to keep as much as possible. That's also the reason why long diets don't work. The body get used to the lower calories. Supplement with L-Tyrosine and BCAA during a diet will reduce this.

Its also what causes the yoyo-effect when you come off a longer diet and start eating normally again. the body will feel that it's time to 'save' now because before the calories weren't enough.

That's why having a higher calorie day every few days in a cutting diet is essential to keep fatloss going.

....well it is easter soon!

anyways do u think it would be a good idea slowly increasing my calories to the 'calculated maintenence' of 3000ish and then starting again from there?

i used to do crazy diets going as low as 1400 cals......ive only just made it up to 2050 cals a day.

I always get to the high single digit bodyfat.......plateau... ....then rebound  :-[

Well then going to 3000 and starting from there will result in the same thing.

What is your current goal? Are you natural? How old are you?

If you don't want to state the above infos, PM me or stay general.  ;D

If you want to bulk, then i would say just add 10g of protein to your current maintenance plan and see what happens.

But don't forget as a natty, you won't see the progress after a few days. Wait 4-5 weeks and see if you improve. If you do it right, you won't add any fat, just muscle.
If you think you're getting fatter, lose some protein again.

If nothing happens, add some slow carbs around your workouts. More carbs especially after WO. If you get fat on carbs, add omega3 fatty acids in the evening and morning instead of carbs around WO.

My personal advice would be, you stop ALL supplements now and try to get your whole protein intake through food.
Then you will automatically get more calories. You can add in some supps again when you feel your stagnating.
Try it, it works.  ;D ;D

Just play around with your diet and food intake, everyone reacts differently. What i wrote worked very good for me, but might not work for you.

Your not going to like this but ive tried all this carbs, protein, fats ratio's , no carbs for last 3 meals , only low Gi , 50/30/20 , 40/40/20 , 30/50/20  , carb cycling , morn cardio fasted , HIIT , low intensity.

ALWAYS ended up lean and at this body fat BUT rebound from feeling deprived , run down  etc

Adopted similar adonis principles and eat somewhat 'healthy' but just get over RDI in protein and eat whatever but stay to a calorie limit calculated by

LBM in lb's X 12 = total calorie intake

Seems to have got just as lean/bf%  BUT im 4kg heavier than the last time i was this lean.

So im kinda looking for some different opinions other than 'anal bodybuilding' strategys...

Then take a few weeks off of thinking about eating. Just eat whatever you like, don't eat too much junk food please.

Eat low protein for a while.

Don't take this all too serious, you can surely build muscle on bad food, no problem. Every construction worker shows this.
The workers in the coal mines after WWII built muscle on a diet of bread and butter.

It's the health problem that comes with dirty eating.
But it's great to take some time off of BB and nutrition every year.
