2 week no protein shakes update
« on: April 07, 2007, 06:39:42 PM »
Sup ya'll I decided to experiment and stop drinking protein shakes on the premise that they make you hold water and aren't terribly good for muscle growth, here is what i've found thus far.

Due to having to eat more solid food, I've increased my consumption of eggs/egg whites and chicken breasts. This is fucking expensive and since im not rich does factor in a bit, but i've noticed a definite increase in appetite, which is good.  The eggs seem to give me gas, it's getting proggressively better but hot farts SUCK so i'm anxious for my body to adjust. The first thing I noticed was an increase in vascularity, this happened about 2 days in. My guess is that this is due to a decrease in my consumption of glutamine/glutamate which is prevalent in powders. I noticed the skin on my forearms and calves got thin very quickly. I'm dieting and also getting stronger, my weight is still sitting at about 225 but bf is getting lower and im getting stronger. My deadlift has gone up from 405 for 2 to 405 for 5 in less than 2 weeks, and with a little more hip strength ill have it to 455 in a couple weeks im sure, overall im growing and fairly happy.

Since I dropped the powders, I wanted a replacement, something to fight off catabolism during the day, and a friend suggested BCAA's. I have NEVER taken these in my life, I always drank protein shakes, so on his advice i picked up some bcaas, its called BCAA+G from MRM. The product seems very high quality, but it doesnt mix in fucking water SO what you do is put 3 scoops on top of water, and chug it down. Odd product, but HOLY FAWK right away i could feel a difference, I am taking it 4 times a day, in the morning before workout after and before bed, and every time i drink it my muscles feel, i cant say just better. Pumps went through the roof, i like it a lot. I would imagine any BCAA product will work well, doesn't have to be this one but I highly recomment bcaa's now. I keep it with me so I can take some if i miss a meal, seems to work really great, and no bloating or water retention! Im also adding cardio starting monday in the morning, so im going to take a dose before i do it, and probably after as well as i seem to consistenly burn muscle whenever i do cardio. We'll see. Overall I'm very happy, I really do not feel powders are used efficiently by the body and eating all whole foods is working. WIll update again in a couple weeks, any questions shoot.

Thanks for the post Mike.  Anyone else have some constructive critisism or advice concerning protien shakes?  Right now I am taking a Champion Nutrition "Heavygainer 900" in the morning and an ON Whey 80g shake at night.

I dropped all my supplements and lowered protein intake from foods and replaced with more carbs, strength and energy is way up. You will feel better and healthier to replace some of the protein with carbs as long as you are active.

the only time for a shake is right after a workout to tide you over until your real meal 30-60 minutes later whey isolate 50or so grams does the job well

rest of the time real food is the way to go

I will agree on the vascularity increase and definition. Like you said though it is more expensive and time consuming. If I was dieting for a show though a month out It would be a good idea to just take in solid meals.

The heavygainer has been around a while, so it's a reputable product for sure. If you're bulking and trying to pack on mass I would say it's a decent pick, though I have seen better results with cytogainer and more recently isopure mass. The ON shake is in some ways shitty, but can also be really useful. It is pretty much pure concentrate, so ideally drink it right when you wake up or right after you workout. It has a second advantage that I think is somewhat overlooked in that you can buy it in "natural" flavor, which has zero artificial sweeteners. I think the chocolate is also sweetened with cocoa, I almost totally cut out artifical sweeteners, save the occasional diet coke due to health concerns. BTW your body can only assimilate around 40-50 grams of protein in a 3 hour period, I would say weight training will increase this a bit, but 80 grams no way, you would need to be on a decent sized cycle to use all that. If you are going to drink something that concentrated, try using twice as much water, and drink it over a 2 hour period or something.

You are probally allergic to eggs and your more vascular because you most likely allergic to dairy wich the protien shakes are made of , wich equalls water rentention. the less dairy in your diet allowed for the less water retention resulting in your new found vascularity!

assuming you're lean, water retention will actually make your veins appear thicker.
