According to the Bible, the origins of evil is the devil.  The origins of the devil is God.  God created the devil as an archangel.  The devil became proud and greedy and rebelled against God.   God casted him out along with 1/3 of all the angels in heaven, who had sided with the devil.

The origins of evil in this world and in our lives, according to the Bible, again is the devil.  He tempted, and continues to temp humanity to disobey God. 

Evil is an absence of good.  According to the Bible, obeying God is good, while disobeying God is evil.

why do so many people in Christianity assume that the devil/evil is involved when bad things happen or in the choices they make?

While on the Jewish side it seems like it is a test of faith and improvment is needed.

Christians do not assume anything.  Christians go by what the Bible says.
