As much as I like seeing Gonzales squirm I'd rather the person doing the grilling was a little less despicable than Feinstein.

If my choices are her or Kennedy, I'll take her.  :)

I predict he'll lose his job, but no criminal charges will ever be brought against him.

I'm not sure yet.  Based on what I've heard so far, the only way he gets fired is if there is pretty solid Republican support for his ouster.  He still has support on the committee (Hatch for one).  I haven't heard anything during the hearing so far that will result in Bush firing him.  And it's the president's call, no?  Can the Senate remove him?

Nobody should be removing him from anywhere until they stab him with a fork first!  >:(

Another case of the lesser of two evils. I'll stick with the chubby nightshirt wearing boozehead on that one though.

Hearing is over.  I have to say:  are you kidding me?  All that dang smoke, claims of illegality, lying, etc. and that's it?   ::)  I mean not one accusation that he broke the law or lied?

The mic stayed on Schumer who said to someone on his staff or another senator that "this is not a knock out blow, but he took 20 steps back.  I don't know how the president keeps him after this."   ::)

I have to admit that chants by people in the audience were funny:  "Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey, resign" (or something like that).

I've figured it out.  Beach Bum settles for mediocrity.

Cause anyone who strives for greatness has high enough standards that even if Gonzo was your own father, you'd be disgusted enough by the way he has handled his job to throw him on his ear.

To support AG is to admit you have low standards.

Yeah, this definitely isn't a "knock out blow".   ::)  Plus, that statement alone by Senator Schumer speaks to what they were after anyway, which is not to question the firings, but just a plot to make the President and his appointees look bad.

LOL!    ;D  Did people in the room really do that?  That's hilarious!  They'll let ANYONE into these hearings, even 3rd grade-minded adults.  lol

I agree.  I think for the most part they were just trying to embarrass him.  I can't believe this is it.  Even after spending my money hiring one of the most expensive law firms in the country, this is it.  Unbelievable.

The people did chant.   :)

Straightforward question, BB...

Do you honestly feel that Alberto Gonzales' continuing on as Attorney General is in the best interest of the people of the United States?

Not necessarily....

To people of his ilk, a political victory for The Leader is - by definition - in the best interest of the subservient masses he commands.

It would just amuse me to have his love of the boot-in-the-face put on record.  :)

Yes.  What law did he break?  What lies did the Senate Committee expose today?  What I heard today was Gonzales say mistakes were made (in the process, not the result) and took full responsibility.  He does not present himself very well, but he stepped up and accepted responsibility for this manufactured controversy.

It is not "in the best interest of the people of the United States" to have partisan witch hunts that remove political opponents just so one particular party can have a head on the mantle.  This has been all smoke.  Not even the flicker of a little cigarette lighter.  Nothing.

I was getting pummeled by four of my female business partners at lunch today, but they're all liberals.   :)  And when I pointed out the fact that there was no smoking gun today, not even an accusation, they started talking about the "torture memo" and "habeas corpus," etc.  My statement to them, and you, is this hearing today wasn't about anything that Gonzales did wrong with the firings, it was about all of the other things that people didn't like about him (like the "torture memo").  He has been walking around with a target on his back since he took over.

My preference is battered and fried.

Gonzales reviews are in: ‘Like clubbing a baby seal.’CNN’s Dana Bash:

Loyal Republican after loyal Republican in this hearing room, and more specifically, in private to CNN today have made it clear that they are frankly flabbergasted by how poorly they think the attorney general has done in this hearing. … During the lunch break, in private, several very loyal Republicans made it clear to CNN that they were really dripping with disappointment.

CNN’s Suzanne Malveaux:

[White House officials] believe Gonzales is in trouble. … Two senior White House aides here describing the situation, Gonzales’ testimony, as “going down in flames.” That he was “not doing himself any favors.” One prominent Republican describing watching his testimony as “clubbing a baby seal.”

I think the quote from the unamed republican was meant to imply that it was as painful as watching a baby seal be clubbed at least that's how I read it.  I listened to a bit and he was getting his ass handed to him (at least the part that I heard).

1. "Taking responsibility" would be resigning for having fucked up one's job, compromised the integrity of one's office, and embarrassed the man who hired you. What Gonzales has done has its own term - "paying lip service". And if you'll notice, several of the Senators of your party seem to agree with me.

2. If you don't see the crushing irony in your saying "It is not 'in the best interest of the people of the United States' to have partisan witch hunts", I'm sure you never will.  :)

3. You're right - I've hated Gonzales ever since he abetted the practice of torture. I don't understand why you don't hate him for that too - since it has disgraced the country you're so patriotic about and endangered the lives of the soldiers you support. And I'm sure I never will either.  :)

2.  What, specifically, are you taking about?

3.  I don't hate any politician simply because I disagree with him or her.  Yes, I'm "so patriotic" about "the soldiers" and my country and Gonzales has done nothing but try and protect our men and women in uniform.

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales was to be summoned to a Capitol Hill showdown Thursday as he fights to save his job in the face of calls for his ouster over the bungled firings of eight U.S. attorneys that Democrats say were driven by party politics. ...

Gonzales himself has provided differing versions of the events, first saying he had almost no involvement in them and then later acknowledging that his role was larger, but only after e-mails about meetings he attended were released by the Justice Department to House and Senate committees. ...

Critics allege that some of the eight fired were dismissed to interfere with ongoing corruption investigations in ways that might help Republicans. Gonzales strongly denies that, but Democrats have maintained that a stiff denial is insufficient without more details.

Some Republicans acknowledge that merely sticking to the talking points in Gonzales' prepared testimony will make it hard for him to hang onto his job. The committee's senior Republican, Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, dismissed the prepared remarks as "pablum."

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070419/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/gonzales_prosecutors

actually, what the Repubs said is even though he did NOTHING wrong, his credibility is shot.

So it looks like you guys might get the witch hunt results you were looking for..another innocent man fired for nothing. Schumer even said there were "rumors" of wrong doing but none were found yet...
gotta love life
