Diet advice for intense lifting/fight training
« on: April 19, 2007, 07:30:49 AM »
My question is how do I go about going low carb while lifting, running, and fight training?  I was thinking of doing the protein/vegetable carb combo for majority of my meals and then loading with a carb powder before sparring and training. I can survive on the low carbs before lifting but I need something to burn and keep my energy level up while running/sparring etc. My goal is to get leaned out and cut this last 15 lbs. Ive tried in the past but ended up crashing while doing extensive training.   Any thoughts? Btw im 200-205 lbs around 12-15% bf.

Simple, don't use a "low" carb approach, use a "no" carb keto diet...high protein, moderate fats (good fats) and you will not have any negative up and down energy levels...it won't be physically possible.

If your running and fighting, why would you want to do that?

I'm not a fighter, but to me, low carb does not mean no carb.  With low carb (less than 200g per day, IMO, but others definitions may vary) there is plenty of opportunity to consume energy-producing "slow burning" carbs which are a solid source of energy but still allow you to lean out.  Yesterday, for example, I stayed under 200g of carbs (198g) and I was still able to have a sweet potato, 2 slices of ezekiel bread, blueberries, 3 whole wheat tortillas and a meal replacement shake.  It's all about timing, going no carb for periods during the day, but then ingesting them with sufficient time for your body to be able to use them efficiently.

Sounds good to me. I thought something like that would work. Most of the day low carbing  and then sometime before training taking the carbs in for the energy. Ill have to mess around with it to find out a good time to get them in.

Don't insult Inteseone.

How about you just train harder?  You already said it, you ended up "crashing" when you were dieting.  You need to keep getting good kcals and if you're training is right, the weight will drop off.

Do you have a fight coming up or is this recreational?

Now, if you need to drop some lbs fast, then yes, I'd try some carb cycling.

All the fighters that we train have no problem dropping weight when training for a fight, in fact, they have a hell of a time keeping it on.

Where was the insult?

I dont just drop lbs like that from training. It usually takes diet work to get me to move much in my weight.   Ive been in and out of training for quite some time right now im just getting back into sharpening up skills. Im consistant in the gym 4-5 nights a week sparring and doing some ground work with the intention of fighting in 3-5 months.  Im gonna try to add cardio in sometime during the day way before practice, maybe in the morning but work is at 8 so its rough to get it in. Before I start dieting ill see how things go with me just training and working hard. If nothing happens ill start making adjustments.

If your running and fighting, a low carb diet is not wise, you carb consumption should be higher than your protein and fats kept low, you can still drop weight with higher carbs, if you are training for an athletic event you cannot expect to follow a bodybuilding-type diet, it must be more calorie controlled!
