You could pretty much ask this question about every thread here.
19 might be on the high side.

Look at Petrucci's set. I'm just thinking out loud here but that to me seems like if you add enough drums and learn to function amongst them anybody can sound good. Let's see what he can do on Ringo's set.

Ya maybe it's just me but you don't need that big of a drum kit.
Dave Weckel also has a shit load of drums. And so did Louie Bellson in recent years

Mike is one of the best drummers ever.. But not as good as Steve Gadd
You forgot:
Dave Weckl
Vinny Colaiuta
Dennis Chambers
Gary Novak
Buddy Rich
Tommy Igoe
etc, etc.
Most people are fooled into thinking speed=great drummer.  Time, groove, chops..usually in that order.  Many guys have speed and sound god awful or have no style, such as Carl Palmer.  Quick as hell, but that's about it.

Portnoy has some good fills blending double bass with sufficient speed, but you really can't compare him to the great drummers of all-time.

I would really question if you have ever seen a great drummer play.
Usually, most people know little about music and think Neal Peart or John Bonham is the best drummer of all-time.  Once I hear this, I assume they haven't heard much in other styles of music outside rock..haha

Take it from someone who has seen each on of those guys play, including Jack.  You're strongly mistaken, almost laughable to make such a comment.  Next you'll tell me that with the right trainer, Carrot Top can be Mr. Olympia.

Peart is the quintessence of soulless technical facility. Emerson and Lake should have picked him to be "the new P" in ELP instead of that other guy. Nelly would have fit right in with those wankmeisters.

Canada has produced great songwriters. But it has not produced any great instrumentalists that I can think of offhand.

Bonham was unique combination of suave rock timing and brute sound force - more deserving than not of his followers.

Peart might have 20% more academic technical facility on the instrument than DeJohnette - i.e. playing in 15/7 time or some meaningless bullshit like that. But DeJohnette has 200% more expressiveness and artistry.

You're comparing Linda Ronstadt with Aretha Franklin.

Stop making a fool of yourself.  8)

Good stuff.  And I agree.  You can't compare technical facility with style.
I wasn't saying Peart is better than DeJohnette or even comparing the two.  Reread my post.

There are many drummers who have awesome technique/speed, but few have a distinct style and are remembered.

See above comment.  Obviously, the guy is a freak and can blow all over the place.  I'm not a big fan of heavy double bass use.  It's kind of cheesy.  Same with Virgil Donati.  Amazing chops, but will never be remembered down the road.
Oh, I forgot Jojo Mayer...guy is unreal.  Here are 3 clips, Vinny, Jojo, Carlock.
