Bodybuilder knew dangers of steroids???

Whatever the death certificate lists as a cause of death, Norman "Rocky" Rauch knew what the real cause of death would be.
A champion weightlifter and bodybuilder, Rauch long abused steroids. Years later, he talked to anybody who would listen about the risks.

Rauch's own medical problems began in 1971, with boils over his entire body. Blood tests found a staph infection, severe liver damage and a diminished immune system.
It would be just the beginning of his health problems - and steroid abuse.

"I think about all I went through since I took that stuff," he said. "I have boxes of trophies, over 200 of them. I look at that and say, 'Was it really all worth it?' Would I take all of that and melt it down and cash out a clean bill of health, swap it out?
"I mean, if I could I would. But I can't."

Rauch died of heart failure April 11. He was 65.

A native of Allentown, Pa., he came to Wisconsin in 1960, assigned to the U.S. Air Force's Truax Field in Madison. In 1984, Lake Geneva became home.

Rauch first started using steroids in the late 1960s, while in the Air Force and training to try to make the 1968 U.S. Olympic weightlifting team. The team physician handed out pills and told the lifters to take two a day for eight weeks, he said.

"We didn't know what they were," Rauch told Gary D'Amato, Journal Sentinel sports reporter, in 2005. "They were little blue pills; dianabol. Oh, yeah, they worked. I got stronger."

He cycled on and off those pills for three years, getting stronger and stronger. Then came the boils.

"I asked the doctor what my choice was," Rauch said. "He said, 'Quit and live or take them and die.' "

Rauch quit and tried unsuccessfully to make the 1976 Olympic team. He turned to bodybuilding, winning a Mr. Wisconsin title.

Later he began "stacking," the risky practice of combining pills and shots. He was looking good, including in the over-40 division of 1982 Mr. America competition.

Even more happened in 1983, as he used more drugs.

The best thing was meeting the former Trudy Thompson, who became his wife in 1987. The worst was episodes of "roid rage" from the steroids. He won the Mr. America title, but immediately admitted to Trudy that he had been using.

No more, he promised her.

Rauch kept that promise for three years.

"Then I caught him with a needle in his butt," Trudy Rauch said.

He again promised to quit. One week later, he woke with a lump in his neck the size of a golf ball. It was malignant.

Other health problems followed. Basil cell carcinomas and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Cancer treatments and a bone-marrow transplant. A staph infection that damaged his kidneys, followed by years of dialysis. Arthritis and heart trouble and bouts with depression.

He and his wife ran Rocky's Gym in Lake Geneva, where Rauch preached the message against steroids.

"I really don't want to see anyone else go through what I did," Rauch said. "I could have avoided all that."

He also became a presence in the community, active with the Rotary and the American Legion.

"My daughter, Jody, said he came into a small community, not knowing anyone, and now everybody knows him," Trudy said. "He got involved and cared about his community."

Survivors also include daughters Sally Rauch, Jennifer Humphrey and Jody Brock; mother Dorothy; brother Charles; and grandchildren.

Visitation was held Thursday. A brief visitation will be held at 10 a.m. today at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, W775 Geranium Road, Pell Lake. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m.

More B.S propaganda and people with absolutely no knowledge on the subject making accusations. What else is new? These are people who claim steriods are really "bad" but they smoke weed, drink alchohol, do cocaine, take over the counter drugs to cure common colds and headaches (not realizing that was is contained in these over the counter meds are far more damaging to the liver  >:() etc, etc, etc. Talk about the pot calling the keetle black. Skinny non-bbdg people who find every reason to cry the blues when they see a bigger or more ripped guy because they take pride in making progress as slowly as possible. I condone the use of AAS but I do not condone ABUSE which is a whole new ballgame. People need to get seriously educated before they make stupid posts just like the so called natural paraders on this forum who cry the blues about AAS all day long. Get educated first folks and remember that this originally started as a BBDG forum so if you don't like hearing about it then just leave.

65 years is a good life span. Not too long were you have to live in a nursing home and not too short were you don't get to see you kids become adults.

How do you wake up with a huge lump in your neck (unless your Bon Jovi) in one night?

Agree, KK. And, in any case, 65 is just long a life span not to be considered cut short, abridged. Probably a generation longer than Warren will see.

steroid related side effects are real, just look at the fallen bodybuilders. It's pretty disheartning to read crap magazines like MD recycling the same articles on how great steroids are  ::) Romano, Flex and Palumbo are living proof, lol

The only thing you need to be educated on is the fact that taking an ILLEGAL substance to enhance your physic is CHEATING.  Where have the morals and values of our society gone?  Why educate yourself on taking drugs that are ILLEGAL!  Asswipe!

they aren't illegal in most parts of the world.  they were not illegal in the USofA until 1991.  there is no logical reason for them to be illegal now, other than congress wanted to look like they were doing something about a problem that really wasn't there.

Even Gary I. Wadler, the chairman of the U.S. Anti- Doping Agency, admitted that there was no evidence for the 'highly fatal' side effects of steroids.

If they're cheating then EVERY single advantage an athlete has over another is cheating. In basketball being taller would be cheating. In football throwing the ball more accurately would be cheating. In track being faster would be cheating. The only way there would be no unfair advantage given would be if every single player was uniform in every single way. But see, that's called communism, and it doesn't work. Asswipe!

canadaphiliac ....you are wrong....

Being tall, being a certain race, having some sort of build due to genetics is what you are dealt with..

Steriods and having better technology for certain sport are examples of enhancements which therefore can be considered cheating...

Logically, how is it cheating? Do they make you throw any more accurate? Do they make hitting the ball any easier? If it's cheating since it's an unfair advantage, then what if everyone else is on juice? Taking the drugs out of sports would be the death of professional sports as world records would plummet. Don't be a retard, and don't be a sheep.

canadaphiliac ....steriods increase muscle mass, therefore it compliments the person's strengths and gifts...its is you that is being a retard. Steriods also gives the ability to recuperate faster as well

Would you ever step on a bodybuilding stage where everyone was not natural and you were the only one natural?  Think of it as a supposed "natural" contest where you were the only one following the rules?  Are you going to say that no one cheated?

Stop being a retard!

So, if someone has better food, equipment, personal trainers, what have you, available to them, that's not cheating? I would say that gives a much greater advantage that steroids ever would. Let me rephrase that, an intelligent person would realize that gives a much greater advantage than steroids ever would.

And what business is it of yours what I do? And if thats your analogy that its "Cheating", then tell that to the 95% of ALL atheletes in the world today. Do you know that stats say that 500,000 american teenagers alone are on AAS and that does not include atheletes, and regular people. Steroids are perscribes medications by the way so if you have a perscription they are NOT illegal. Get an education and quit telling people what they should or shouldn't do you nosey asswipe! Go back to the Natural board!

'cheating' has been going on since the first olympic games/sport/war.

it's part of life. man will do anything he can to win. it's called striving, and no 'striving' does not simply mean training reeeeeallly hard and stuff. ::) it means the aforementioned.

no drug test or bullshit law will ever stop this because the desire to succeed is far more powerful than the desire to detect.
