What's the most unusual protein you've consumed?
« on: April 22, 2007, 01:40:37 PM »
I had fried dolphin in a Florida restaurant as a young kid back in the mid-70s - back before they were considered too cute to kill.

Tasted like fish.

I remember being in Key West a few years back, and seeing Dolphin all over the menus. My band members were wondering "I thought they were illegal to kill? What gives?" ::) Eventually all of us felt stoopid when we found out there was another fish called a dolphin that had nothing to do with "Flipper" the illegal kind of Dolphin.

For me, it's not too unusual, but I've had duck- too greasy. I remember having possum, quail and I think I even had armadillo once at a Texas BBQ.....

I guess I didn't put that well.  ???

My point was that dolphin (a mammal, don't forget) "tastes just like fish" the way that frog "tastes just like chicken".

As a 7 year old, I was surprised.

Though maybe it wasn't Flipper and really was a fish - like that other guy said.

Man, this thread is going down in flames.  :(

In Florida and the Caribbean, 'dolphin fish' is often on restaurant menus.  In the Pacific it's call Mahimahi.  It's also called dorado.

In light of this new information, I am changing my answer to home-cured buffalo jerky.  :'(

Funny you ask. I am just now eating/sampling roasted fava beans, which I picked up yesterday on a whim, intrigued by what seemed like an extraordinarily high protein content. Not bad. A bit dry, perhaps, and I doubt they would be as palatable without whatever it is they dusted them with. I'll give'em a 5/10.

So your dad was your scoutmaster?

 ;)

Is there a joke in there somewhere?  My dog's name is Scout and I sometimes call him Scoutmaster  :-\

Weirdest thing I've eaten is rattlesnake and alligator (or was it armadillo? ;))  while in Texas.

I can't believe they sent me out into some field in the dark  >:(
I recall being really pissed when I learned the truth.
