Seated calf raises work the SOLEUS muscle of the calf...That is the muscle below the GASTRONEMIUS that makes your calf look like it flairs out (downward pointing triangle shape) and tapers toward the ankle.

Learn what a piece of equipment is and what it works before you comment
True; it's not always essential but seated works the smaller, outer part of the calf more than standing.

Why should I want to do that if I can have 1 or 2 buddies on my back ?

You may not want to do this exercise, but it does work.  Nothing looks more gay than have a couple of men on your back while doing donkey calve rasies.  If you're going to do donkey calve rasies at least do them the Arnold way and have a couple of hotties on you back.

gay

Having a big sweaty dude on my back woth his d*ck uncomfortably close to my ass shouting "push harder" or "get one more in there" is something I'll pass on. You ever see how it looks wen they guy first gets on your back?...not pretty. I'll just do them with the donkey machine or the Smith and finish with seated calf raises. :)

No doubt about it; it wasn't an accident that the producers had women climb onto Schwarzenegger's back, knowing what that would look like with dudes.

But you could tell Arnold didn't like it, he would rather have Franco and Ed Corney climbing his back .......

there's nothing wrong with hammer machines if you know what you're doing, if you just go into the gym and load plates on to look like a bad ass then pretty much everything is gonna be crap.  If you work on constantly overloaading the muscle it really doesn't matter what equipment you use..hammer, icarian, precor..as long as you are consistantly looking to push more weight or get more reps than your last workout you should be fine.  If a guy goes into the gym and puts 3 plates a side on the hammer incline..gets 6 reps for 3 sets and then 6 months later does the exact same thing then he's gonna fail no matter what equipment he uses but if he goes in and gets 6 reps with 3 plates and then 6 months later he's worked his way up to 4 plates and a quarter or something he'll be fine.  it's not the equipment it's how you use it ;)

Don't know what is meant by that. Can be used in any way.
What I mean is why go heavy with a hammer strength machine?  If you are gonna go heavy, use the bench or db's which will give more benefit.

HS machines never were made to see how much weight you could load on em.

Every gym I've worked out at has one and I've NEVER seen a guy press as much on a real incline press as he can on that machine. I could do 4 plates on each side and I know i'm not nearly that strong. it's a bullshit machine

So that makes it useless?
and keep moving!

They can take huge poundages though; commonly used by football players for power moves. As far as which is more beneficial, it's not one or the other.

Do personal trainers count as gym equipment?

If so, then personal trainers are the most useless peice of equipment in the gym....

Imagine if all the fat people found out that simple cardio and a sensible diet will get them thin, instead of doing incline dumbell presses with 25lbs shiney dumbells supersetted with jumping on a milk crate.

he's saying that circuit training is gay.
the dumb exercises they make you do (half of them on the swiss-ball)
are what he's protesting.

*he's got a point, but you do need to firm up the muscles if you're planning to thin out, otherwise u get alot of flabby skin and shit.
