pasta vs. rice?
« on: May 05, 2007, 07:04:51 AM »
A 20lb sack of rice is cheap and can give me all kinds of carbs but I LOVE ME SOME PASTA! A bag of spagetti with light sauce can last me for days. I'm curious as to why rice is recommended more so than pasta? It's got more carbs, more cals, and even more protein! 7 grams in a serving! I realize that it's not as high on the glycemic scale so it burns up like bread and sugars but post workout and pre workout meals could be a good place to put them!!?

I'm already jonesing for pasta and have been sucking down cups of rice each day with damn near every meal.

I also want to know why milk is frowned upon as well? I cup has 130 cals with carbs, sugars, protein, etc. and I use 2 cups in each shake I take. Getting in all the total cals you need when on is very hard to do CLEAN which is why I'm asking the questions I am.

everyone on here will have a different opinion on all 3 of those foods

i'm no expert, but i don't see any problem with drinking milk as long as you can digest it without getting all gassy and crampy.

i go through different craving for rice and pasta. some weeks i'll want pasta everyday, but then the next i'll be craving rice.

it's not like we're all ronnie coleman's getting ready for a big show. none of the 3 are going to harm you unless you're eating way too much.

Rice is far superior as it does not prvide a spike in your blood sugar.  However even white rice will do this brown rice is more stable and provides a continous balance in blood sugar levels.

Yes. Rice is far better than pasta.

If you want pasta, try japanese soba noodles, made from buckwheat.

No, milk is great.

It's almost a MRP, just have a big glass of milk. Recent studies also show that milk protein is better for building muscle than soy protein.

I have nothing against milk, it's just a fun quote from Arnie.

brown rice is f ckin horrible though - and the only way to make it ok is to somther it in soy sauce or sweet and sour or sommat, so it kinda defeats the object

Most pasta has a medium-to-low GI. And with all these great tasting whole grain pasta varieties, it's easy to find one which is both nutritious and great tasting.

Most rice are high GI.

Brown rice being an exception, but still not as low as whole-grain pasta.

Brown rice is very nutritious though.

But avoid white rice.

I'm always touting this stuff on the board, but if you can get it where you are - Barilla Plus, which is high protein (complete proteins, I believe from egg whites in part), high fiber.

On white rice, obviously it has pwo applications (don't be afraid to down some sushi pwo, nice combo of easily assimilated protein and high glycemic carbs).  Otherwise, Hedge is right, avoid.

One final note, rice (brown or white) and pastas (even the good ones) are extremely carb and calorie dense.  The rule on these is Proportions, Proportions, Proportions (i.e., small amounts- use a scale, measuring cup whatever, don't make more than you need-which is a BIG mistake).
