What kind of dog is that? Doggy DNA
« on: May 18, 2007, 08:28:32 PM »
My vet mentioned this back when I got Scout,  but I thought it was still a long way off.  Apparently not.  Early this year, MMI Genomics, Inc., launched the Canine Heritage Breed test which uses DNA technology developed in mapping the humane genome to identify dog breed characteristics.

$65 test kits available at mmigenomics.com  Results take 4-6 weeks

Some breeders already do DNA testing on their dogs so that they can prove (or disprove) lineage. People have falsified litter records saying a different stud was used to improve the "lineage" of the puppies.  Or if a top bitch was accidentally mated by a stud dog of not as good quality, put the other dogs name as the stud.   I personally know of one case in the dane world where keeping lines color pure is a top debate with breeders.  A harl mated with a fawn and a fawn stud was listed instead of the harl, to keep the line pure on paper.   5 year suspension from the AKC resulted meaning no litters could be registered by this person.

Thanks wood!!        Looking at the site I don't think I can use it for my 1/2 dane?  Danes aren't on their identified breed list.   :-\    I wonder if that is because Great Danes are a cross between a mastiff and greyhound?  So the test would come back, Mastiff, Greyhound, and whatever the other 1/2 of her is ?

Identifiable Breeds
Afghan Hound               German Shepherd
Akita German                Shorthaired Pointer
Basenji                        Golden Retriever
Basset Hound               Greyhounds
Beagle                        Italian Greyhound
Belgian Tervuren           Labrador Retriever
Bernese Mountain Dog    Mastiff
Border Collie                 Miniature Schnauzer
Borzoi                          Poodle
Boxer                           Pug
Bulldog                         Rottweiler
Chihuahua                     Saluki
Chinese Shar-Pei            Samoyed
Chow Chow                   Shetland Sheepdog
Cocker Spaniel              Shih-Tzu
Collie                          Siberian Husky
Dachshund                  St. Bernard
Doberman Pinscher        Whippet
English Setter               Yorkshire Terrier

Capabilities
Please be aware of the current Canine Heritage™ Breed Test capabilities:

Canine Heritage™ Breed Test only works for the above breeds that have been validated.  If your pet’s breed composition contains non-validated breed(s) the test may identify breed(s) earlier in your dog’s ancestry.  This may cause identification of apparent unlikely breeds for your pet’s composition.

i probably wouldn't order one yet then, i think they'll add more breeds to the list as the tests grow in popularity...

I just called them and the guy said they are looking to add Great Danes at the end of the summer, so I will bookmark and keep checking that site and see if/when they add them.     :)

More importantly you can invest money in finding out your own (human) origins :):

He does look it hazbin, great pics!  I don't think they can detect the DNA unless it's part of the testing protocol and when I did it, they could test only certain breeds.  The list has probably expanded to other breeds by now but I doubt they include the wolf.  On that note, I miss my Wolfen :(.  He was part Husky/Malamute/Wolf.  I need to scan some pics and post them.
