who's getting more out of thier training?
« on: May 19, 2007, 06:07:37 AM »
2 guys start training about the same time, who do you think is gonna make better gains, here's the scenerio:

Guy 1:  Starts off using moderate poundages, 3 sets of 8-10 reps of each movement.  Smaller muscle groups have 9 sets, larger ones have 12-15.  On Bench for instance he starts off with 135lbs for 10, 145 for 8 and on is last set me does 155 for 8. His form is perfect on everything.  At the end of 6 months his bench has progressed to 160 for 10, 165 for 8 and 170 for 8.  So he's made what most would consider 'moderate" strength increases. All of his BP's basically follow the same trend.  He always uses a full range of motion and concentrates on getting a pump and having a "mind-muscle" connection.

Guy 2-Thinks outside of the box-which is not always a good thing but he does 1 or 2 sets per movement, 1-2 movements per bodypart.  His training centers around heavy partial movements using only the "strongest range of motion" for each movement.  So on bench he never lowers the bar to the point where he'll get stuck, always keeps it about 4 inches off his chest in the lowest point, stops just short of lockout.  His poundages go up alot while his range of motion is consistant, he doesn't concentrate on a pump, no mind muscle.  He starts off using 135lbs on the bench but at the end he's up to 185 or 190-his range of motion and technique are the exact same aswhen he started, all muscle groups are trained in this fashion.

both guys are the same bodytype and both use the same diet, the only difference between the 2 is style of training.

who's gonna get more out of it?

1 by a mile, since i lowered the weight, and do 10 to 20 reps, with great form my chest startet to grow, if you train your ego with bench, only your front delts are gonna grow.

No clear answer, because the comparison's muddled with arbitrary conditions. Compare the styles and hold the other variables like mind-muscle and pump constant. In which case i'd take B.

natural al, maybe each style will work for different people?

To paraphrase Troponin (pbuh), "there are a million ways to build muscle. But the surest way not to build muscle is to try all million ways at once."

neither one of them will get shit compared to the Lee Priest school of training, a shitload of 6 rep sets on the heavy basics.

guy 1 will have a bigger chest

guy 2 will have bigger triceps?

lmao...honestly i don't get why people don't go all the way down on the bench press.  The only way partial movements should be done on the BP is on the lower half of the movement.

Anyways assuming that these two guys are both "noobs" to lifting, and they both are equal genetically, then it wont really matter what the hell they do as long as they train consistently 3-4 times a week.  They'll both probably look about the same.

But in the long run...guy 1 will have more development then guy 2.
Like Milos says "partial movement, partial development"

Neither. The guy imparting full ROM for most of his work, using weights that fail him out between 10-6 reps each set, and using partials and other training techniques from time to time while constantly striving to progress in weight and rep ranges will get the most benefit.  ;D

I'm just curious to see what people say,...I'm not saying which one is right or wrong or that I would train like either of these guys.

Anyone can train..but not everyone can train SMART! People are so used to cookie cutter magazine and internet shit that they fail to remember that EVERYONE beyond the basic chromosome layout is DIFFERENT! You have to find what works for YOU! What works for big al DAMN SURE wouldn't work for me! The key in everything is to train hard, train smart, and train even harder. The most powerful weapon in your bb arsenal isn't your chest, it DAMN sure isn't your arms after seeing the arm thread, or any other muscle at all. IT'S YOUR BRAIN!

training is no rocket science, just stick to the basic raw movements, try to do everything standing
(some excersizes for exeption), 6 reps or less at his heaviest, every time try to improve your lifts, avoid machines and slow contraction bullshit. eat four solid meals a day and drink plenty of water.

I like to get a good stretch on bench, full rom.  But, my training partner who is 6'7"+ tall with even longer arms proportionally, goes down to where his upper arm is just below parallel with the floor.  A lot of shorter stockier guys don't even do that lowering the bar all the way to their chest!  So, in that way, he is still getting a full rom for him.

Also, imo, anyone who does 9+ sets of biceps work is flogging a dead horse after the 5 or 6th set.  Heavy chins and rows will do a lot of bicep work.  So, if you are doing 15 sets for back (which I can understand), and then 9 sets for biceps, it's like doing, say, 12 sets for biceps in the end- if that makes sense.  I guess I'm just a moderate all the way around.  But, in the end, I guess whatever works for you works.  I think it can take years of trial and error to figure out all angles- unless you are Trey Brewer or someone like that.  That guy has more muscle fibers in his leg than I do on my whole frame...
