Rob, I think there is a true & false answer to this. It's true for some who have nothing outside of their work & it's false for the ones who have hobbies & other interests outside of their career.

Brutal relying to social security(which is nothing), brutal not saving or investing, brutal getting into debt trouble with stupid cars and purses.

I have a high yield savings account back in Bangladesh.. Earns me 8%, and I don't even deposit much. Uncle Sam don't know about either.  It's not hard to maintain as I send the money back with people and it's always under $9,999.

I'll be set for retirement.

Trying to be slick against the Irs is dangerous game.  They have a hydra system and will eventually get to you.  Just because you may get away with it now dont think it will last.  Once they get a hold of you the penalties, interest and litigation are a mess to deal with.

True or false?

I think it is not retirement itself, but rather that sometimes people retire from more than just work; they withdraw socially, intellectually, physically, and spiritually.  Maybe some people lose their will to live.  Not that they intentionally kill themselves - they just gradually stop doing the things that keep humans vibrant.
