Former Mr Universe dies aged 60
Paul Grant won the titles of Mr Universe and Mr Europe
A Swansea bodybuilder who beat the star of television series The Hulk to be crowned Mr Universe died at the age of 60.
Paul Grant won the title when competing against actor Lou Ferringo although the pair went on to become close friends.
Well known in bodybuilding circles, Mr Grant took part in competitions across the world during the 1970s winning numerous titles such as Mr Europe and Mr World.
But in his mid-30s he was struck down with a rare kidney illness which badly affected his eyesight.
"Paul was a great ambassador for bodybuilding - he lived for the sport
By 1984 he spent eight hours a day, three times a week, linked to a kidney dialysis machine at his home in Clydach, but still took part in the British championship that year.
He later became president of the Welsh Federation of Bodybuilders and continued to support up and coming talent by staging and promoting competitions.
The organisation has paid tribute to Mr Grant saying he would be missed by friends across the world.
"Paul was a great ambassador for bodybuilding - he lived for the sport and continued competing despite his failing health," said the spokesman.
"He won every title going. He had friends from all over the world he met through bodybuilding - we are all saddened by his death."
