evidently heres the deal...........when art zeller got out of the business he gave arnold the rights to the pics he took of arnold.  FFWD now........evidently there is a new rumor that arnold is going to possibly buy the world gym in marina del rey..................and put the pics from golds up in the new world gym when he buys it.  This is just rumor, but evidently we might have a real historical bbing and hardcore gym in venice after all if arnold buys the gym.

Hmm... this would have probably been better served in the previous thread...but still this is interesting...World Gym/Marina Del Ray closes its doors on June 12...the owner of the building doesnt want a gym there....this is interesting nonetheless...

I am sure if Arnold buys that location and wants it there he will buy the building.  He owns so much real estate already in the area.  And I don't see him paying rent to anyone.

I thought Shawn Perine said it had nothing to do with Arnold at all?

I would think if anyone knew it would be him or the Flex people.

Would he make the gym just another fitness temple or a "real" workout place?

Man, i really hope this is true.

It would be nice to see someone run a gym without worrying about the financial aspect and being forced to cater it for soccer moms (mmmm) and the elderly.

Would need to run the gym "on an island", give it its own name and hire a kick ass manager or partner for the day to day. It can happen, but will be expensive for the investors. I see this as just a rumour, considering Arnold has been trying to distance himslef from the "hardcore" aspect of his old lifestyle.

If he wants I am available to talk about running this going forward.   ;D

Well, it's actually not as clear as it might seem on the surface. I think everything will start to come to light soon enough. It's public knowledge at Gold's Venice (everyone is talking about it there everywhere you turn) that a call came from a legal entity for the pictures to be removed. That much is apparently true.

More importantly there are a number of people who are focused on saving Joe Gold's legacy, aka/the equipment at World Gym. This is really a top priority in "Mecca" land right now. That stuff is priceless. And it works better than any other equipment I've ever used, even though it was built by Joe himself over 40 years ago!

Not that I have any secret information I'm holding onto, but if public info regarding this matter surfaces over here I'll do my best to let you guys know about it. Everyone with an interest in our sport's history deserves to be kept in the loop about this...

Exactly what pieces are in world gym from gold's 1 shawno?

Last time I was there (2004) there was only a multi lat/row/bicep/tricep pulley unit that was from world gym when it was in venice and that was made by Dan Howard not Joe Gold. In the outside area there was a shoulder press and machine bench press as well as a t bar and the chinning unit and some benches that were also from world gym #2 in venice but that was also Howard's stuff he made in the 80's.

I know that the dumbbells were hand made by Joe Gold and they are an amazing set of dumbbells.

my sources tell me that Golds will close within 2 years because once their lease runs out, they will not be able to afford the new rent. If this is true, they must not be that smart in business, should have bought the land and the building many moons ago!

wouldn't they just relocate to an area nearby then? I mean, it is the headquarters- they can't just shut it down entirely, or could they?

Arnold, while distancing himself from bb..... could do this for the Joe Gold Legacy and the mecca....

He could buy out under a corporate name to keep his hidden.  Arnold has always been aware of whats going on, and is probably getting things together like this.
The venice golds that exists now, is not the one on pacific ave where arnold, zane, robinson, padilla etc trained so it could go .....no problem.

If World gym stays it will be the new mecca for sure and i for one will be traveling there to work out 2-3 times a year.

You know what, we can bitch and complain all we want and not a damn thing is gonna happen from the bullshit that's happening to our Gold's Gym/Venice or World Gym/Marina Del Rey.

The only thing that I, or anyone else who has trained or visited these historical gyms, is remember how it used to be.  :'(

Is there really nothing we can do, or could this be a turning point for our sub-culture where we band together and start another "hardcore" flagship. ....from the ashes...can we can regroup?...A NEW mecca perhaps?

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say 'no'. Gold's/Venice had always been "the mecca" and if they can do away with that, I don't see a new "mecca" forming. These changes are happening apparently so they can take a new, different direction, and I don't think it's a direction to please the true bodybuilding fan.

How does a lease expire "within 2 years?" Wouldn't they know ahead of time, so they look for a new place with more affordable rent? A lease expires at the end of a time period, not just as business slows down and the occupants can no longer pay rent do they close....as you imply by the above highlighted statement. :-\
They've remodeled numerous times over the years, correct? Adding rooms, taking out a wall, adding a wall here or there....right? I wonder if they had the owners consent to do so, and why would you do that to a building that you do not own and know that in X amount of years your lease will be up and you may/may not be able to afford the new rent.....

The Golds Gym chain should be able to afford a flagship-Mecca club. Then need a showroom for their clubs and Venice is that. As you know that gym gets most of its equipment donated by equipment companies. So the cost of running that club isn't that much. They do have lots of members so who knows what the books look like. All I can say is it is not easy to keep a gym afloat for decades without changing things and spending money.

I can conceive of a much better bodybuilding gym than the current Venice facility. The World Gym at Marina del Rey isn't as good as Golds. Everyone knows that. However, the World Gym is still a nice gym. Hey, I hope someone saves all those amazing old scales that Joe collected!

Joe visited my gym in Sydney when he was out here for the 1980 Mr Olympia. At that time I didn't have even one weight stack. My lat machine ran on shafts but you loaded plates. I installed large 8 inch pulleys, though, and after using it Joe said it was smooth and that was all that mattered. He was just being nice. It was always my goal to build great equipment and have a really good gym. We have grown and evolved far beyond a bodybuilding gym. We have a separate free weight room and our main equipment area is chock a block with machines.

Imagine a great gym that was huge and well lit with a large adjacent car park for 200 cars. There would be a separate aerobics room and a few other rooms where fitness nuts could do specialized training. There would be a large cardio theatre where zillions of the latest computerized machines would be installed.

In the main room, which would be about 20,000 square feet would be over 200 of specialized machines targetting every bodypart. Machines would be chosen from different companies according to how effective and different they were. Only the best machines from each company would be bought. For example, no line would be bought just because one or two machines were great. There would be an arm area, shoulder area, etc., etc.

Adjoining the main equipment area would be the free weight room. Stainless steel handles would be on all the dumbbells.  There would be rows of dumbbells between rows of specialized benches. There would be an area for plate loaded machines such as leg presses, hack machines, Smith machines, etc., etc. This area would be as large as the main equipment room. Can you imagine rows of racks and Olympic bars? What a sight that would be.

In between the main rooms would be an outdoor swimming pool surrounded by palm trees. There would be lounge areas and a store for apparel and supplements. The whole complex would be ultra modern and have plenty of natural light.

The complex would be about 60,000 square feet. That would be some club. It could be feasible for a city the size of Los Angeles that has a good density of population. I am sure we could all build an ideal gym in the sky.

the golds gym of back in the day died years ago..........the last time golds was anything or had anything that kept the history intact was around 1999, after that it went to hell, all bbers quit training there, and a huge influx of uneducated fitness crazed wannabees became the new praised members of golds gym.......I remember one day I was doing the decline hammer press in the back, had about 5 plates on each side, lifting it, grunting while the manager mateo walked by with a 74 year old lady.......after my set, mateo came up to me and said, "you know your a problem, that grunting and weight you were lifting lost us a customer(meaning the old lady), I looked at him and said, YOu know you guys have all these pictures of huge guys on the wall and athletes pics up, and when someone comes in here and sees a person really working out they get intimidated.....how in the hell can me working out lose you a sale......The management was accusing me of losing a 74 year old lady signing up, because I was working out.......I wanted to punch mateo in the fukn mouth.......its that kind of shit that is ruining golds gym.

The sad truth is bodybuilders are not great for business. Every bodybuilder who has owned a gym has to diminish the affect that muscleheads do to the profitability of a gym. Today gyms have grown in size and the rents are huge. Plus, gyms are open from early in the morning until late at night. Imagine all the staff wages and other costs. In the original gym Joe ran it by himself. That gym was about 2500 square feet with a shower block on the mezzanine. I know of a Tony's Gym in Sydney that is smaller than that but still going. Tony has a nice little gym there and gives great service.

Gyms have had to cater to everyone and that means putting in more facilities. Gyms cost a fortune to set up, maintain, and run. They are a high investment but low return business and that is why smart businessmen like Arnold do not venture into this business. Imagine if Arnold owned a gym and some unsavoury activity was going on there. He couldn't afford the scandal or hassle.

I have a separate free weight room. I still have some muscleheads and they are a great bunch of blokes. Bodybuilding and gyms go well together but it takes some careful management and set up to make it attractive to the general public.

The last time I was at Golds Venice in 2004 the place was busy at 11 am in the morning day after Labor Day in September. There were some big guys there as there always is. Most of the members were just trying to get in shape and that is what just about everyone is doing at all gyms.

For a hardcore gym venice gold's is actually too big... meaning it needs the general public memberships to survive.

Sure it has lots of equipment but who really needs half of that junk?

Last time I was there it had about 5 ab crunch machnes but everyone waited to use the nautilus nitro one because the others all suck in comparison.

Same with the leg press... everyone waits to use the black FLEX one.

The entire FREEMOTION setup is a waste except for the crossovers.

Sure they might get it all cheap or free but they still gotta pay rent on all that floorspace every year which must be massive.

Those huge gyms out in vegas are a different story... I bet the rent there is way cheaper per square metre than venice.
