Wrestling background of top fighters?
« on: May 30, 2007, 08:43:34 AM »
I'm curious what the backgrounds are of guys like Randy, Coleman, Fry, and Severn...

Were they considered major players in the wrestling scene before they started MMA? I know Coleman has a great background, but I wonder how the other guys rank on the world scale. I could wiki them, but designations of "world class" are a dime a dozen, and especially when guys like Joe Rogan throw that out every two seconds. I want someone that really knows wrestling to explain it. It's hard to know what is bullshit, and especially when you aren't familiar with wrestling rankings.

all college wrestlers, most d1 athletes. some national and world team wrestlers. Ive always said wrestler dominate the sport. they can learn other disciplines well and wrestling dominates bjj on the ground every time. all you have to do is scramble and slam and you wont get caught in a bjj hold. look at the top guys in the sport. all started out as wrestlers. they train harder and are more disciplined than others.

Randy is a three time NCAA all-American, and three time USA champ in Greco.  He placed second in the NCAA tournament twice, but didn't quite win it (if you haven't found out by now).  I'm sure most people already know this also, but Kevin Randleman, while not a "top" fighter, is a two time NCAA champion for Ohio State.  I had to mention that again since I'm a Buckeye also.

Right.....Why don't you send some these guys down to texas to train in the 115 degree metroflex gym for 2-3 hours.  I am sure the 2600 pound leg presses, the 800-900 pound squats, the 700 pound hacksquats, the 300 pound leg extensions.  Oh yeah and don't forget hamstrings and calves are left.  These guys could handle ronnie colemans training with a snap of there aasics wrestlings shoes.  Please... there spines would shoot across the gym with the rest of there organs coming out of there asses!  Just cause someone has done a regional show or trains with weights sure as shit don't make them a Bodybuilder. ::)

these guys would run ronnie into the ground in 5 minutes of live wrestling, pound for pound i know 141 pound wrestlers stronge rthan ronnie that are natural as well. 20 year old kids starving to make 141 that can still squat 350 +, bench 315 for 4-5 reps, and cling and press 225 for reps. give me a break, i respect ronnie but wrestling like bodybuilding is a lifestyle. you have to live it 24, seven when your in season. i couldnt eat junk or go out and party. i practiced, lifted, ran, and studied and worked a few nights a week. it takes everything you have to be the best

Generalizations like this drive me crazy.  Kevin Jackson sure was able to slam out of that armbar that F. Shamrock slapped on him.  (And he is a gold medalist)  Mark Coleman sure was able to scramble out of the SAME armbar from the guard against Fedor.  And his wrestling sure helped him against Nog.  Wrestling sure helped Kevin Randleman escape a footlock/heel hook against Shogun.  I can go on forever.

BTW, how many top tier wrestlers (not cross trained MMA fighters, but pure wrestlers) hold a world title in a major MMA organization?

Good grapplers would kill any strength athlete over time.  Especially if the strength athlete is pushed past what little cardio endurance they have as well as anaerobic endurance.  Wrestling, Judo and Jits are full body workouts that require strength, flexibility, explosiveness, balance, cardio endurance and anaerobic endurance.  Try rolling five, five minutes rounds, you are DUST.
