There were no other British Metal vocalists to chose from at the time.  Though I do like the X-Factor, cool album.
The X factor is not only Maidens worst album, but possibly the worst metal album ever. Boring, plodding, aimless and devoid of everything that made Iron Maiden great. Personally i wouldn't have minded if they had a foreign singer [as long as they wern't 'American']
I'm so metal I'm listening to the Moody Blues for breakfast. A true metal head admits his guilty pleasures like Stephen Perry's Foolish Hearts!
Its true that every metaller has his guilty pleasure - mine is Puffy AmiYumi. Sayonara :-X

Vitual XI is by far the worst Maiden album, though it has some good songs, followed closely by No Prayer for the Dying.  Bruce should have just got counselling and got over his mid-life crisis and we wouldn't have to have had this debate. :P

And my guilty pleasures of loving folk, prog and classical music is well documented.

But if Bruce hadn't of left we wouldn't have got The Chemical Wedding - the second best album of all time [behind Kings of Metal].

Virtual XI is dreadful, but No Prayer had some good songs. I love Holy Smoke! One of my fave Maiden tracks, and probably their heaviest.

Do you like Porcupine Tree?

I could live without Bruce's early solo career, Shunkworks makes me sick.... :-X

Holy Smoke is a good song, as is No Prayer for the Dying but two songs does not maketh an album.

Porcpine Tree I could take or leave, wouldn't spend money on them.  ELP and King Crimson are my Prog loves.

I've got Rick Wakeman's Journey to the centre of the Earth, and the King Arthur album. Used to love them whilst pilling :P

Don't like ELP, like In the Court of King Crimson though. I enjoy the music of Yes, but his horrible voice makes me feel ill. That's as far as my progginess goes - unless you count Dream Theater.

His druming in achilles last stand was amazing!

No one could bang it like him.
