Some interesting tidbits:

1. Jim Manion is the only judge who picked Padilla to win the whole contest (One point off a perfect score). He also picked him as winning the posedown (an extra point).

2. Domini Certo (a USA judge) had Padilla tied with Hubert Metz (who got 11th) and Johnny Fuller (8th) and Bannout (9th) and Tinnerino (7th). Where was this judge coming from?

3. Manion had Padilla win the "General Assessment" round and the "Free Posing" round, but had Franco win the "Compulsory Posing" round.

4. Winston Roberts and Sven-Ole Thorsen had Dickerson winning the whole thing with a perfect score.

5. Franco Fassi of Italy and Doug Evans of Wales had Columbu winning the whole thing with a perfect score.

6. Dominic Certo had Platz winning with a perfect score.

7. Jacques Blommurt had Roy Callendar winning the whole thing, just one point off a perfect score.

8. The posedown was useless. Everyone gave their posedown point to whomever they had already voted as the winner of all the previous rounds. It changed ZERO places.

Could the judging have been more all over the place?!

1981 Mr. O Judging Sheets for top 6 final score:

1- FRANCO COLUMBU: 296
2- CHRIS DICKERSON: 291
3- TOM PLATZ: 290
4- ROY CALLENDER: 286
5-DANNY PADILLA: 282
6- JUSUP WILKOSZ: 270

THE INTERESTING POINT THAT AFTER THE FIRST ROUND, ALL TOP 3.... COLUMBU, DICKERSON & PLATZ WERE TIED WITH 96 POINTS .....IT SEEM THE JUDGES HAD DIFFICULTLY TRYING TO FIND THE WINNER THAT NIGHT.

Padilla had better legs - quads more cut, and way better calves, mostly genetic, nothing Shawn could do about that. Padilla also had better lats.

Classic example of the unfairness/politics of BB shows. Columbu is a truly arrogant turd, never stops promoting himself or saying how great he was meanwhile here's Padilla clearly outclassing the guy-way ahead in waist size, taper, thighs and arms.

Props to Frank Zane for speaking the truth on Columbu in that PBW interview BTW.

I believe Franco was the first one to invent "The Fridge" physique and Jay Cutler is the predecessor, which I disagree.

He had an edge on Padilla & almost every bodybuilder except Robinson and Van Den Steen on density & conditioning, but even in '76 condition i think Padilla wins based on better balance, better structure, better overall size. Padilla had one of BB history's best combos of balance, size, shape and aesthetics, unlike Columbu.

Agreed; i call Yates the Columbu of the 90s. Both with the classic powerlifter torso and arms that aren't big enough, and lacking the classic BB lines and tapers to small joints.

the more i look at these shots (including page 1) the more i lean towards franco.

he had so much more size and density that he looks like a man stading next to a boy.

chest, delts, back, abs, intercostals, serratus...the entire upper body just murders paddilla.

paddilla should have done a lot more HEAVY work in the off-season.

I have tremendous respect for both of these guys. Danny is/was a BB. I think it's important to note that Franco comes from a powerlifting background which may give reason to his tremendous thickness in the upper body (delts, traps, chest, back) If I recall correctly Franco had a 485 bench, 750 deadlift, and a 500+ squat– all at a bodyweight of 185 lbs. I see similarity to another powerlifter turned BB, Johnnie Jackson.

2 questions:

1. what pics were you looking at?

2. what drugs are you on?

balance, symmetry, proportion - all padilla, agreed, but nigh and day muscle wise.

danny's arms were better simply because he had longer, fuller muscle bellies. nothing franco could do about that, but yes, better arms.

legs - all padilla.

padilla was the better bber, no question.
