" Inconsistency is the hobgoblin of little bodies. Who do you think you're fooling when you dodge hard workouts with rationalizations such as "the avoidance of overtraining" and the "chaos principle?" That's right: yourself. In none of life's other arenas does that thinking work. Try telling your boss that if you don't do any work today, your project that was due this morning will be finished faster. And try telling your wife that the new hot tub you're installing in the back yard will be finished earlier if, according to the chaos principle, you fill the tub with water before you dig the hole for it.
Muscles grow when they are forced to work progressively harder; also, by using the same workout each time, your previous training session serves as a baseline for comparing whether you've made progress. Diversions from your normal routine are excusable only if they rarely occur, provided they make you work harder. If I change my workout in any way, it's only for the purpose of increasing my weights and/or sets, or for driving myself closer to eternal rest in that great iron pit in the sky." - Kevin Levrone
