Billy Gibbons, incredible guitarist.
Try playing La Grange....half the solo is one note....total control of the guitar.

Isn't the solo supposed to be a one take, no practice, 'just wing it' solo as well?

Yeah, you have to hit the string with the pick and your thumb at the same time at different points along the string. It's some sort of pitch harmonic.

ed actually did 2 solo's, I'm pretty sure he winged it and MJ picked out the one he liked best, if you go on youtube there's actually a clip of Ed onstage with the jacksons trading licks with Tito, I haven't seen it in along time but I think Tito is doing a bunch of whacky shit like putting the guitar behind his head and ed just kinda laughs at him....

I never knew that, till I either read it here, or another friend of mine mentioned it.
The other day I'm working out and the song comes on, and I listened a bit closer when the solo came on. You can totally tell, once your attuned to it, that it's Eddie. One of those "he plays one lick/note and you can tell it's < insert name >" kind of things.
I wasn't sure if he played the rhythm part or not, but thanks for clarification on that. :)

And as far as "winging" a solo, it's not that hard to do. Lots of guys like to plan solos out and whatnot, but to someone like Ed or another "best guitar player," it's really just like brushing his or her teeth...

from what I understand 9 out of 10 of Ed's solo's are "winged" he doesn't really plan them out but there are some exceptions.  There's also a few times where he's spliced different solo's together, I think the solo in Jump was from 2 different solo attempts and he spliced them together, some stuff on Fair Warnings is done that way.  Most of the Sam era stuff was ed winging it.  Ed used to be great at doing that but the booze has really tore him up....I don't think he can pull it off anymore.

FYI-I was just thinking about Lukather playing the rhythm for that song and it reminded me that there are rumors that Steve actually played on a few of the later VH records, filling in for Ed cause he was to trashed to record it himself.  Usually I'd just blow that off but go download a lukather song called "twist the knife" which is basically the same as an unreleased VH song called "I want some Action" and pay attention to the guitar playing, Steve can sound just like Eddie if he wants.  Twist the Knife also features Ed on Bass and some of the guitar parts were used by Ed later on the Van Halen III song "Dirty Water Dog".....you can download a demo version of I want some action but I've never really heard a good version of it..it did sound like a cool song...I'm just babbling now...

I'd agree with that. For the 99% of the population who doesn't play guitar or who only know chords they wouldn't know you need only have a pentatonic scale to make a solo. Winging a solo is probably easier for a capable guitarist playing in a top 40 band then holding the beat for 4 minutes.

Most people learn the pentatonic minor, and then they find they can move that same scale down a sixth (minor third....example, from the tonic of A down to F#) and they now have the pentatonic major. This is the scale that BB King uses quite often.
Those same 9-10 people you mention, also stop learning any scale or theory (read: progress) after those two scales are learned.
Really, you only need four scales to play over any chord and/or chord progression.
