Moss in the Hall of Fame?
« on: June 07, 2007, 09:36:20 AM »
I saw a espn piece last night asking the question should Moss and or Terrell Owens go the Hall of Fame?

Your thoughts?

I can't stand either one of them, but hard to say no based on the numbers.  They will both finish as two of the best WRs in NFL history from a statistical standpoint.

Potentially,  the Pats could be a force as Brady finally has someone to throw to that is a impact player.

Espn's commentators assertion on both of these guys was that their off field antics and failure to give 100% all the time will keep them out of the HOF.  I would tend to vote that way too.

It's not so much about what you can do or did.......it's what you did with what you had and the example you set as a result.

Moss has underachieved on the field.  T.O. is more of a punk off the field, except I think he did lead the league in both drops and TDs (for a WR) last year.

Look at where they currently rank:

Moss
29th all time in receptions
21st all time in yards
5th all time in TDs

T.O.
17th all time in receptions
16th all time in yards
4th all time in TDs

And they're still playing.

I didn't realize their rankings were that high.

Longevity helps when it comes to HOF voting.  Being in the top 10 at your position for 10+ seasons certainly makes you worthy of consideration.

Both of them are in the Art Monk category in a grey area, in their cases thanks to some huge, recent negatives. They'll both need a couple of good years to make it, TO because of a massive, inexusable number of recent drops and Moss for the last couple of years of mediocrity.

both were by far the most feared receivers for atleast 5 years

if they don't belong than no receiver belongs

IMO the NFL ought to send a message by not letting Moss or Owens in..

Michael Irvin will get in and he was a badboy, plus his team won three titles. Moss' teams have gotten close, so has Owens', but he caused them to implode. Also Owens is probably the reason why Parcells quit.

isn't the hall of fame voting done with a round table discussion with all the voters? that could factor into it if someone is really for or against them

I don't think so, but not sure?  Based on the comments I've heard from some of the voters, they tend to make independent decisions and whenever they do meet (whether it is some or all of them) they already have their minds made up.

I think Peter King was one of the guys I heard talking about how voters pretty much have their minds made up before they get to the meeting(s).
