Because there's too much air time, and not enough real news available to fill it.
The 24-hour news cycle is a major contributor to the bullshit world we live in today. In an effort to fill air time reporters latch onto any crap angle they can think of (ephedrine, steroids, the dangers of protein consumption, there's a terrorist behind every corner, whatever), beat the drum loud enough and often enough that low-IQ soccer moms believe it as gospel, and next thing you know the brainless fools in congress are passing another law we have to deal with.
I honestly think we'd be better off in the media were only allowed 1/2 hour of news a day, the way it used to be. That way you wouldn't have reporters falling all over each other trying to fabricate crap to air.
