The special invite has traditionally been used for long-time greats who for one reason or another weren't able to compete to "qualify", but the quality of whose physique made it a foregone conclusion that they would have qualified had they competed.

The "special invite" was made exactly for guys like lee priest.

Gunter got like 6 special invites, and he WASN'T a huge deal.

lee is one of the top 5 stories of 2005 and 2006. bringing him back is monster good faith move that the IFBB loves its guys. keeping him out means they're more concerned about inconsistenly enforcing rules.
