Abs
« on: June 19, 2007, 05:43:39 AM »
What is required for strong, toned and sculpted abs? Is it all about diet and cardio? I am hearing that crunches alone is not the answer; how much work is required to whittle a 30-inch waist down to a 24 or 26-inch waist?

Definately diet, cardio and you need to train abs like you would any other body part with the same hard intensity. Diet is very important here. The "moderation" theory must be thrown out the window. Eat clean and you'll prosper  :)

Mimi, it means keep away from fatty foods and empty calories.
Just eat healthy stuff that's going to provide you with the proper nutrients to build your body.

I always thought it was muscle tone & definition and a lack of fat that enabled one to see the abs.

Mimi, are you a bodybuilder, do you plan to pursue it? or are you more interested in toning & sculpting your physique? I'm not a bodybuilder or fitness model and have no aspirations to pursue that path.

I don't obsess over numbers, ...either calories, or weight, and would never advise anyone to do that unless they are into competition of some sort. I think limiting portions would be a more sensible, reasonable and far less painful approach to accomplishing fitness goals. But that's just my take on it.

Diet and exercise..

I don't even do crunches and I'll have a 6 pack for the Mr. Getbig..  :P Abs develop from squats, bending and twisting your torso and deadlifts..

Crunches, or ab machines are worthless. Althought situps are very good if you want a strong core.

I am not looking to compete; I am more interested in being healthy & toned. I am short and would like to develop a curvy physique. I don't eat a lot of junk food, but my abs are weak from having children. I am not concerned about my weight on the scale; I am looking to change my body composition.

Thanks; I will try to do that. I just have this bad habit of over analysing things; I am somewhat of a perfectionist.

Not so true for women, Camel.  Diet and cardio for fat burning and training the abs via abdominal stimuli (exercise that crunches and contracts the abdominals) is what works for women.

Okay so this might be a little on the gross side, but I use it as motivation, (yea so I am a sicko, big deal  ;D )

Coroner's have stated that the one thing is common in every autopsy done on a human is that they all have developed ab muscles.
its doesn't matter if you are extremely obese or a professional athlete, the "6 pack" is always there, it is part of natural human development

The trick is to have it show from behind all the fatty tissue.  That is all that is needed to have abs, and that is the really hard part.
Everybody has got abs, you just need to get them to show themselves.
Just Bad Bad Blood!

And the only way that will happen is through cardio and a kickass diet.

Right, there Power lifters with increadably strong midsections who look like Michalen Man.
They have deep abs under all the fat.

Ditch all drinks except water for awhile, even quit diet drinks IMO. Drink plenty of clean water.
Take a good look at the % of Carbs to protine your eating, and try to get down to a minimal amt of carbs that you can function well on. Learn the difference between HI & Lo Glycimic index carbs and lean towards slowburning carbs the give steady sustained energy instead of peak and crash. Pick out lots of lean protines w/ not a lot of fat, but in some respects fat is better diet fuel than carbs, no insulin response or water retention from Fat. But a fat Kcal is a Kcal.

there's another factor, slow crunches and sciscors will enhance the abs because they tend to tighten the skin around the muscle. I don't really know what the process behind it is, but I can see it on my own abs. After some abwork, this style: slow and really focussing on the overextension and the contraction: http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/RectusAbdominis/WtBallCrunch.html  (I generally use some pillows instead of a ball) my ab definition is improved for a few days and then the effect wears off.

Again, although I sound like a scratched record repeating itself: I suggest regular strenous sex.  Twice a day M-F and 24/7 at weekends.

I could see this as being possible if I was screwing a different guy each day of the week ;). I think my husband might have a problem with that. I thought we were doing good; we average 4-5 times a week ???. Maybe I should get some Viagra :-[.
