He used to claim he was born in 1939, but the truth is he was born in 1930. That man had it all together up until the late 1980's.

Sorry, other way around. He claims he was born in 1930 to make it seem more impressive that he was so much older but he was really born in 1938.

not to nit pic but that pic isn't from the 84 olympia...or at least I don't think it is.

I think you can see Albert getting 3rd place in the lighter class in pumping iron, I haven't seen that part in awhile but I think that's the case.

That still would have made him 46 in 1984 which is still impressive.

Who said he LIED? and what reason would there be for him to LIE about his age? More impressive?...that sounds like a LIE to me. I believe the man was born in 1930. I think the fact he looked as good as he did/does made quite a few pricks JEALOUS and therefore the rumors about not being as old as he said he is. I saw him around 1993 or 4 and he LOOKED GREAT. He was at a show at Manhattan Community College in New York and the host of the show said then that he was 63 and the audience gasped and Oooed , because he looked so good and was so ripped. There is much to be said about using the roids from back in the day. These guys like Beckles, Ferrigno etc are still around and still look good where as todays champs with all of their new roids are dying at thirty years of age.

NO, it was revealed that he was really born in 1930. He claimed to be 7 years younger than he truly was. Where did YOU get your facts from?

Beckles almost died from a clot in his leg. Blamed his low sodium diet IIRC.

Beckles is one of my all-time favorites, not a weak part on his whole body and a great poser.

Albert changed ages circa 1984. While the rest of us aged one more year, he aged several. Before then, by looking at the relevant issues of Health & Strength and studying when he arrived in England, and at what ages he then competed,  the math works fine if he was born in 1938.

In some of the events he entered, were he born in 1930, he would have been in the senior division- he was not.

Before 1984 he is quoted as insisting he was of an age indicating a 1938 birth even though others tried to claim he was older.

Why would he do this- claim to be of the general age of Park and Pearl? Beats me. Marketing would be one reason- look this good at this advanced age or whatever.

I wrote an article for cyberpump.com offering many specific instances to support why I believe he was born in 1938.

The top photo is from the 88 Olympia, and no matter what age he was in 1991 when he won a pro show, what i saw him do at our gym was amazing. It was the day before the grand prix and he came in to train chest,he picked up a pair of 10 pound dumbells and did 15 reps.He rested about a minute and moved along the rack to the next weights and did 15 reps.In total he did 18 sets and went all the way along the rack using every pair of dumbells up to the 160s where he did a set of 10 reps.

Whatever his age may be, he still looks great. I see the guy every day at the gym. He trains with Mohamad Mozen,  Dream Tan owner. Mohamad is looking pretty impressive as he is getting ready for Masters Nationals.

the above expresses my sentiments but in a nice and civil tone.  unlike the language i would have selected which would have certainly been less articulate and thoughtful.  who gives a flying fuck if champion albert beckles lied about his age.  as marion barry said: "get over it"

To be clear, I do not know if Albert lied about his age- I do know there is a major discrepancy.

Who cares? Those of us who want facts. Were Bill Pearl and Albert born the same year? If so the stats I track (oldest winner etc) will be different than if Albert is eight years younger than Bill.

If Albert at age 27 had competed in the teenage division against a 19-year old, that would also matter.

If others, for whatever reason, do not care about such details, okay.

wow :o

i remember the first when i picked up my second muscle mag when i was a little kid (circa 1986). i bought the mag purely because there were pics and article of beckles re his tips on gaining muscle mass. i was absolutely awe struck by those pics and i hung on every word i read (i now know it probably wasn't him that wrote it ;D). as a kid i didn't give a hoot whether this guy was 20 or 60 i just knew i wanted a body like his. to think he was nearly 50 at that time is just mind boggling.

the only thing i thought sucked about his advice was that muscle mass should be gained slowly. i mean wtf 14 year old male wants to gain size slowly. i liked arnolds advice better, but i just didn't have the balls or the know how to get me some dianabol. ;D besides, no way would my parents let me. my own mother used to tell me even at this age that she thought my muscles were gross (my arms were all of about 14" :-\) and my dad, who was built like a tank thought i was a complete narcissist. "you gotta work a real job to get real muscles." ::)

what's even more shocking when looking at mtm's pics is that beckles pretty much owns fox in the front double bi shot. his arms are actually bigger overall, more shredded and better balanced than fox's. :o, but that might have more to do with brutal's seemingly inability to know how to get shredded without losing a ton of muscle. what was that with fox ??? :-\

beckles is a bbing legend. an absolute rarity in sports and had a ton of class to go with it.
