What a waste of time. All the stupid people buying SUVs for no good reason could've been disuaded with high gas prices decades ago. Thereby forcing knuckleheads intent on buying huge SUVs to avoid them in the first place. Now we're stuck with endless numbers of these things on the road, mainly bought as part of a fad.

Common sense forced on masses who never figured out that Americans can live without big cars that made no sense after the mid-1970s.

More and more SUV's are sold in The Netherlands. The people that buy SUV's need them to show the world that they can afford a car like that. Other then that, it serves no purpose.

I wouldn't necessarily agree with that. As a vehicle for a single person, ...it is a bit overkill,
...but for those with a family, an SUV can seem like a blessing, ...especially when it comes to lugging stuff around.

Ask any hockey MOM and she'll tell ya, ...or those who routinely go on road trips.
There's a reason they're so popular and it's not merely a fad. There is function to them as well.

Was waiting for that stock excuse to come up. Actually that's a misperception; a shame that politicians and others with public platforms didn't clarify this in stronger terms a decade or more ago, considering that the masses don't bother to inform themselves voluntarily.

For families and the moms obsessed with safety minivans were always the winners in terms of function, but weren't trendy enough for the followers. Minivans are roomier in general, more fuel-efficient and safer, with wider wheelbases and lower centers of gravity thus less chance of roll overs. The moms who buy SUVs for safety don't know any better and while they're more protected inside than in a smaller car, there's also increased probability of rollover so in terms of overall safety there's not a big advantage. They protect themselves with tons of metal at the expense of others they hit, which let's face it is selfish. They don't know better in general though and never bothered to find out.

Another better alternative that's happened years too late are the new hybrid SUVs that have become popular just recently. Built on car chasis instead of the usual truck platforms. Lighter, more fuel-efficient and still roomy.

Well isn't that as patronizing as hell? Well thank goodness those dumb moms have such a smart guy like you to tell them the benefits & value of their own investment. Afterall, being chicks, they wouldn't have the first clue about what they want in a vehicle, how to find it, or how to spend their money.  ::)

Predictable defensiveness; be mad at yourself for being uniformed for well over a decade while oblivious to the increasing numbers of these monstosities populating the roads.  The moms buying them "for protection" somehow survived previous decades of driving without them, but the car companies that made far greater profits on SUV brainwashed them into thinking an SUV was necessary "for the kids". These things-trucks basically made for bad road country driving, have flooded the roads for no real reason except fashion.

SUVs (1) are superb at polluting the atmosphere AND consume gas at the highest possible rate-they were originally made for country driving!!!! (2) are massively heavy projectiles that if they hit your or me, are killing us not them inside, and (3) aren't as efficient at moving masses of people as minivans that unfortunately weren't as trendy. ::)

Put the blame where it belongs, on the dummies of both sexes. In the meantime sad to say you're one of the misguided who was also clueless-until now. ;) ;)

And politicians could've done a lot more on this a decade ago, to get this info out to the masses who don't know, and through legislation to force the sheep out there away from buying them. Now with rising gas prices all the short-sighted boneheads are stuck with these things, thereby reducing spending power and putting a drag on economic growth.

Not defensive at all. Who's buying them for protection? Try loading & unloading a carload of kids, dog etc., from a standard passenger vehicle.

Ok, here is where I admit ignorance.  :-[  I refer to everything as an SUV, when in reality I mean mini-van.

...I'm not a Mom, and I don't own an SUV, ...or a minivan?

...and I'm doing something about ground level ozone. I'm also helping people to lower their fuel consumption, reduce the pollution coming from their vehicles, and to save money on foreign oil imports. I'm part of the solution, not the problem.  :D

Yep, ...with this I agree. That's part of why I'm part of the solution.

I help people to save money on gas, by reducing fuel consumption, without changing our lifestyles.

We will travel further on the same tank of fuel, AND reduce the pollution from our vehicles by 85% or more.

We save money on gas, and we reduce pollution, while our engines run better, last longer, and on top of that,
...we have the potential to make alot of money in the process.

It costs people more money to NOT use our MPG-Caps, than it does to use them even after the cost of them.

We have people who're actually making their car payments just by what they're saving on gas. IMAGINE THAT!  8)
