I was reading the thread about Milos' trip to Japan last week, and I must admit, it was nice to see that side of a bodybuilder.  Vacationing, posting pics of he and his family doing cool things in a new country.

IMO, if the powers that be (magazines that sign BBers and use their likeness and stories to sell ad space) were to expand upon MORE of this - IE: a few more personal stories about the bodybuilders - it would make the sport more fun to follow and create an emotional attachment for the fan to the athletes.

Face it, when you go to a show, you're rooting for nearly identical guys.  You might root for Branch because he's a hard worker, Ronnie because you like his accent, Jay because of his perseverance... but when it come to many of the competitors, the fans can't tell anyone apart.  You might not buy a ticket to the Keystone classic because you cannot differentiate between the bottom 80% of guys onstage.  You've never heard of them, and if you have, you know nothing about them.

So that's my idea.  FLEX and MD, consider doing more pieces on what the bodybuilders do OUTSIDE of the gym and the kitchen.  You don't have to sacrifice the coverage of their near-identical training protocols and eating regimens.  But if you dedicated a few more pages to letting the readers learn about the athletes, the emotional attachment (and subsequent rooting for/against) would lead to more people following contests, and more people going to contests.  Just my 2 cents.

Good thread.

If bodybuilding is missing anything, it the Pro's actual 'personalities'.

Last time we saw something like that was Arnold and the other guys in Pumping Iron. We saw the times when they werent in the gym too fooling about. All the pros have DVDs out yes, but its just training and at home eating... big wow for people who dont understand that shit..

Great idea, maybe that is why FLEX has been doing this lately. A day in the life of Jay and Phil in recent issues. It has them in and out of the gym as well as out of the kitchen. They are interesting reads.

I just thought actually, I remember Triple H on PBW, he said WWF (or whatever fuckin name it has these days) does so well because there's so many personallities. He said its the fact that people see them talking about other wrestlers about how they're better and you get to see who the good gusy are and the bad guys etc.. he also make a point about how no one ever says that another guy is bad/gay/poor for whatever reason - instead, they say that they think they're better than the guy - so not putting the other guy down. That way, it keep that sport positive - whereas in BBing, we see guys says how shit someone is cos they have weak this and no lats and small ams etc..

I dont wanna see bbing end up like a silly wrestling show, but there are some ideas there that could help bbing become more mainstream (although it will never actually be MAINSTREAM)

Cool idea. The FitShow guys might be interested in doing a spotlight video too...

Ha...MuscleMag has been doing star profiles and telling you about athletes lives outside of bodybuilding for 20 years. Go figure...

that's a good thing.  They just don't have the circulation of flex or MD.  IMO, flex or md doing it could moderately bump attendance.

I actually presented a project idea to Will at Bbing.com similar to highlighting things like this in video series. He hasn't responded so I guess he's not interested?
