I've just this last weekend helped a friend I have known since I was 9 whose family owned a bookshop for 3 generations called Harts in Saffron Walden, Essex, and watched them close down their business.

Don't know whether they were cursed.

WH Smith took over and the independent book seller went bankcrupt.
Dreadful story which makes me cry.

Could've been Amazon's fault.

...or maybe the majority of today's youth are so focused on being gratified instantly by videogames, internet and tv that it's hard to find one that loves to read books. It's even spreading to the older generation.

My son gets 30min of PS3 time for every chapter he reads in a book I pick. (his grade level...just not a comic book type) ..seems fair.
