The NASM is good if you plan on training for a corporate gym, in which case you will need it to get results out of middle-aged out of shape housewives.

You don't need the NASM to train bodybuilders or powerlifters.

That type of training comes with experience.

Most NASM certified PT in my area are fitness physiques and I wouldn't take advice from someone who couldn't bench/squat/DL their own weight for reps....
