If you are doing penjact silat, I recommend you do greco and muay thai for your close quarter stuff.  Plum/overhook/underhook will work better for you and is more aligned with your "MMA" training.  I do BJJ three times a week and do stand up twice a week.

YEAH PENJACT SILAT IS WHAT I'M DOING I'M DOING IT JUST BECAUSE I MISSED MMA TRAINING YESTERDAY BECAUSE OF MY BRTHDAY. IN THE MMA TRAIING WE DO A COMBO OG JIUJITSU,MUAYTHAI, AND SOME BOXING AND GRAPPLING.  I WOUL DDO JIUJITSU BECAUSE TH ECLASS IS BEFORE THE MMA TRAINING BUT I DON'T HAVE TH EEXTRA CASH TO DO BOTH CLASSES. AND I CAN ONLY TAKE SO MUCH TIME OFF O FWORK. THE CLASS I TAK EI SAT 6:30 AND I WORK FROM 2-10. BUT THE CLASS IS MON-WED,SAT BUT I'M WORKING ON GETTING THE INSTRUCTOR TO COME TO MY WORK AND HELP YOUNGER KIDS WITH DISCIPLINE AND LEARNING JIUJITSU I WORK AT A RECREATION CENTER . ALSO I'M WORKING ON GETTING THE LOCAL LAWENFORCEMENT INTERTESTED IN JIUJITSU BECAUSE ALOT FO OFICERS DON'T KNO WWHAT TO DO IF THERE TAKEN TO THE GROUND. ALSO TH EINSTRUCTOR HAS A TEACHER THAT TAUGHT THE F.B.I SELF DEFENSE TRAINING AND HAS ANOTHER TEACHER THAT SPECIALIZES IN CLOSECOUNTER KNIFE SELFDEFENSE. SINCE ALOT FO OFFICERS GET KILLIED IN CLOSE COUNTERS. SO IF I GET HIM OUT TO MY WORK IT WILL BE TUES,THURS SO THEN I WOUL DGET ABOUT 4-5 DAYS OF TRAINING BUT I DON'T WANNA OVER DO IT AND OVERTRAIN. AND I'M GONNA HAVE MY WEIGHTLIFTING REGIMINE COMPACTED TO FIT AROUND THE MARTIAL ARTS CLASSES.

Kali is better in knife fighting than Silat.  For close quarters, I'd be doing MT and Greco.  Much more conducive.  And like mindspin said, please take off your caps lock.

I boxed for 9 years.  I study Combat Sambo and Muay Thai now.  Whether or not I do anything with it is up in the air.

yep sorry abou tth ecaps lock. penjak-silat was fun but rough got my arm bruised up pretty good from getting my puches blocked but its a good way to learn. and my legs are sore from being in a low stance really working ona low center of gravity. the instructor knows quite a bit i think his base style is judo. but he kicked my ass for about a half an hour good stuff. i'll do some mma training saturday. i've heard of kali and i've hear dof soem stick fighting kuntaw. but i'll do whatever the instructor is teaching. and he doesn't butter it donw like some instructors do he get syou in there and makes you work..

Everyone on Getbig is an MMA fighter, regardless of whether they know the difference between a heel hook and a kimura.  ::)

Well I was pretty lucky in the time I was training TMA only went to one McDojo.... I was there for like 2 years signed a contract (I know the warning bells should have went off) it was back in 1990. I have a few from then I just have to remember them all.

These are all from a B.S. Tae Kwon Do school. (Mind you not all TKD is like this just the school I went to)
1) I was not allowed to go to class for 2 weeks for hitting the senior belts too hard. Not like I was a monster either (only weighed 155 lbs back then).
2) They never taught hip rotation.
3) 3 instructors taught Kata 3 different ways (different movements that is)
4) No Contact sparring
5) Blackbelt clubs
6) 16 year old out of shape kid teaching the adult classes
I know there are more from then but I just can't remember them right now...

Also trained in Kyokyushin now that was some fun training

I do garage training every Saturday, folks from all different academy's come by.  A friend of mine, who trains Kajukembo brought his black belt to train.  Mind you, my friend never likes sparring, unless it is with someone smaller than he.  So when he brought his black belt, it was open season.  Anyhoos, this black belt starts telling my buddy (a professional thai boxer) how to kick, and punch.  (Real story).  My friend Brandon takes this humbly and offers to spar with the kajukembo black belt.  Brandon has no headgear, only mouthpiece, no shin guards, just cup.  He takes apart the "expert" kicker/puncher with leg kicks and ONE cross.  After EVERYTIME the BB gets hit, he asks for "timeout."

My friend, who is a "green belt" asks to spar my nephews.  (who are 125, and 145 each)  What he doesn't know is that they took states in wrestling, (younger one was third).  Well, his anti grappling takedown defense doesn't work, and he ends up on his back getting GNPed.  Second round, he gets heelhooked, triangled, footlocked in succession.

Best part is he tells me after the fact that had they been able to use the deadly Kembo techniques of eyegouging, biting, scratching, that none of that "tournament" fighting stuff would work.

Same dude brings his cousin, who fights on the Paul Mitchell team.  Guys about my size, 6'1, 215, obviously lifts weights.  I figure this is my chance to do something to some of these clowns.  I take him down repeatedly.  I pass what he calls a guard, and make him tap from a side control forearm choke.  (This had my friends snickering)

16 year old blackbelts who would get their clocks cleaned by Drake Dudley and yet still believe that they about to learn "deadly" closed door stuff.  WTF?

Did they tell you how they practiced these "deadly" techniques on a resisting opponent.

i TRAIN mma but do not compete, bjj3x a week, stand up 2x week. other days i weight train.

i will say this mma is the new dj... everyone wants to do it. wich is great. but man i have seen some horrible fighters on rageinthecage. some of wich admit to never trainin a day in there life and they let them compete. thats all good with me its just you can really tell the difference between two fighters with training and two guys just goin at it sluggin it out like a school yard fight, windmill punches and all. so im holding off on the competing part for about another year. i feel im good now but i just want to have some more training under my belt.

i dont want to b one of the people who says "yea i cage fight" and look like a complete ass doing it

Don't worry about what others think. The number of people willing to step into a cage and fight are few and far between. It's the new thing but the TUF fanboy clowns flooding into the McDojo's and the actual schools will die out eventually. Everyone's got to start somewhere and I'm sure a decent amount will stick with it, so it's always better for the sport.

I love training, never plan to fight.  I have done smokers, and I realized that I don't react well when hit on the button.  I have trained, or was a training dummy for a lot of fighters, most of whom have beaten the crap out of me.  Good times, great stories.
