Average cost per month of a BJJ class?
« on: July 08, 2007, 02:41:37 PM »
What does the average cost run for a BJJ class (maybe bi-weekly) in the Washington D.C. area?

Been to a couple websites and no one posts pricing info.

I'm just looking for a ballpark figure...
The answer is "yes".

In my neck of the woods it's anywhere from $50.00-$100 a month, but, I know of a few gracie run schools in my area that charge around $200.00.

I pay 120 a month for unlimited classes at a Relson Gracie affiliate.  We have standup, gi and no gi.  They also bring in big name fighters for seminars (seperate cost).

These prices seem reasonable. I was afraid they'd be $300+ / month. I think I could afford a class.   ;D

Are the classes brutally exhausting? Should I brush up on my cardio first?
The answer is "yes".

Grappling is brutally exhausting, no way doing cardio on a treadmill, bike, stair climber will prepare you.  Just join, go down there and start rolling.

I've seen marathon runners come in and get gassed after a few minutes. Of course, they were newbies and spent their energy, mindlessly.

Maybe it's just me, but if I take some time off, even a few weeks, my cardio goes to shiit.

That said, IMO, the one type of cardio that I think helps in grappling is wind sprints with jogging in between sets, as it most closely simulates what you do in a hard grappling session: a quick burst of energy to improve position (sprint), then a cool down as you try to consolidate the new position (jog).

Oh yeah, the topic of this thread: I'm paying Renzo $189 a month for unlimited classes, but that's abnormally high because of Manhattan rents. I'd say $100 - $125 a month is the average.

I pay 75 bucks a month, but that's in Knoxville, TN.  For your area, I'd say around 120-150 bucks a month would be about right.

I pay $80 bucks a month for unlimited no Gi training. And every Friday we have stand-up MMA Class. It's a good time balls out. Took a foot to the eyeball last week. The boss wasn't to happy about the Black eye.. How do you tell potential students that you got a black eye cause you train.. I love it..

Headgear is your friend.  I was called a pussy by Enson for wearing headgear.  But I have to go to work, and the last thing I need is to explain to potential clients why I have a broken nose, or black eye.  The academy I am at now is a non fighter based BJJ academy that just happens to have fighters.  When there are a plethora of 20 sumthing feeder show fighters, the testosterone runs thick and everyone is trying to take off everyone's head, ripping shoulders out, etc.  I don't need that.  If I compete in two sub grappling/bjj tournaments a year, I am happy.

Travis is one of the BEST sub grapplers in the world.  I hear he is a great teacher as well.  The Machado's are extremely complimentary of him.

he is man. the guy is nuts on the ground. i admit he is VERY laid back wich is why people call him boring. but really hes just not a mouthy crazy kinda guy that grabs peoples attention. And yes he is a very ground oriented guy and people still want to see the knockouts, but man on the ground the guy is just insane

he is scheduled to fight again on ufc74 so hopefully he will have a better outcome. hes already lookin good weight wise

I would jump at the chance to train with Travis Lutter also.  He's great on the ground.  I don't base much on his last performance against Silva because I know he was still severely dehydrated.  That in itself can mess with your mind.  I think if Travis gets back to the root of his training and gets the fight on the ground, he'll do well against anybody @ 185!

Headgear is cool for sure. I just am not a big fan of it. I did hate the night that I forgot my mouth piece and ate a few knees. I had a cut up mouth for a good week. Sucked to try to eat and brusing my teeth wasn't much fun either for the first day or two.
