I rather have a President who is paranoid over American security than the alternative in Bill Clinton.

"Readers of this column may remember the Moscow Institute of Thermal Technology. The boys at MITT are avid fans of Bill Clinton. In 1997, MITT credited the Clinton administration with selling them several IBM and Silicon Graphics super-computers.

MITT officials openly bragged that the new Topol-M 550 kiloton H-bomb warhead was designed using the American super-computers."

"The President loosened America's longstanding ban on the export of supercomputers and other high-technology products to Communist China; this allowed Beijing to dramatically improve the potential accuracy of its intercontinental missiles, vaulting the Chinese missile program forward by at least ten years. A prime American beneficiary of this Clinton policy was Loral Space & Communications chairman Bernard Schwartz, the single largest contributor to the Clinton campaign and to the Democratic Party. In 1996 it was discovered that Chinese spies had stolen nuclear design secrets from the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the most damaging security breach in American history - giving China the ability to produce and deliver nuclear warheads via submarines, mobile missiles, and long-range missiles. Yet a 1998 Senate Governmental Affairs Committee concluded that foreign campaign contributions Clinton had received "were facilitated by individuals with extensive ties to China." A July 1997 Energy Department report, which detailed even more comprehensively China's ongoing espionage, came to light on the eve of Clinton's scheduled summit with the Chinese president. Because this meeting was designed to dramatize his purported success in improving relations with Beijing, Clinton ordered the Energy Department to conceal from Congress its findings about the espionage. Unhappily for Clinton, the new information came to light while Congress was examining how sources tied to China's intelligence agency and military had helped him win the 1996 election - by illegally pouring rivers of money into his campaign coffers. Nevertheless, he boasted that, thanks to his administration's diplomacy, "there are no more nuclear missiles pointed at any children in the United States. I'm proud of that." But in April 1998 the CIA revealed that 13 of China's 18 intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) were in fact targeted on the United States. This was an ominous revelation, particularly against the backdrop of Chinese General Xiong Guangkai's 1995 warning that Beijing was prepared to respond to any American interference in Chinese-Taiwanese conflicts by actually bombing the city of Los Angeles. Moreover, as the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency revealed, China was - in direct violation of U.S.-Russian agreements - trying to buy advanced ICBM technology from Russia and colossal ten-warhead missiles from Ukraine. China was also continuing its illegal transfer of missile technology and equipment to Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Libya, Syria, Pakistan, and Turkey. In 1998, U.S. intelligence reports warned of China's rapid progress in developing missiles capable of hitting targets 7,500 miles away. Clinton mandated that no official White House spokesmen tell the public about the menacing Chinese buildup.

This is so fucking dumb. Selling a handful of big iron computers makes you a few million dollars while you throw away technology advantages we had that cost us BILLIONS.

Wow, that's almost as bad as when Reagan/Bush worked w/ the Chinese to arm the Contras with anti-aircraft missiles.

Or almost as bad as Reagan/Bush letting US nuclear scientists participate in an 'exchange' program with China which strangely enough, corresponded with China's rapid development of nuclear technology by 1988.

Or is that as bad as what current President Bush has done?

Well, I agree with the last point that we should say no to Hillary.

Drudging up the other stuff seems like a desperate attempt by a Repug. to discredit anything Democratic because the current administration has been under such heavy fire.

Let's not forget that Halliburton has continued to do business with Iran (who's their former CEO and probably still running the show?): http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7119752/

I'm sure Gonzo's justice department (now most likely privatized and run by Halliburton) will get to the bottom of this.

Still, Halliburton stands out because its operations in Iran are now under a federal criminal investigation. Government sources say the focus is on whether the company set out to illegally evade the sanctions imposed ten years ago.

"I am formally announcing my intention to cut off all trade and investment with Iran," announced President Bill Clinton in 1995.

Sources close to the Halliburton investigation tell NBC News that after that announcement, Halliburton decided that business with Iran, then conducted through at least five companies, would all be done through a subsidiary incorporated in the Cayman Islands.

"It's gotten around the sanctions and the very spirit and reasons for the sanctions," says Victor Comras, a former State Department expert on sanctions.

Why should Americans even care if U.S. companies circumvent the sanctions?

"The purpose of these sanctions is to dissuade Iran from supporting terrorism and from seeking to acquire weapons of mass destruction," says Comras.

"We don't want American companies propping up a government that's dedicated to our destruction," says Sen. Collins.

The whole Chinese thing is BS..complete BS. This administration as well as past ones view China as a minor threat. First off their military is 2 generations behind ours. Second any war fought over there will involve naval power and air. They have a hard time with both. I don't want to see popular media crap about China's military capabilities either. They have a modest brown water navy and a few submarines. The biggest reason...they do not want a war. They see economics as the war to fight and a war they can win. They will gain economic hegemony over most of Asia. As long as the US feels it can influence some of those markets and invest in China, they we won't havea problem.

What's a brown water navy?

And you're right, the economic war is one they can win and it's their strong suit. It's their ticket to ruling Asia. Their ability to produce mass quantities of goods at cheap prices is second to none. They have a huge affect on our lifestyle, powerhouses like Walmart and Target would not be what they are without China.

Great post, it illustrates why having knowledgeable military members posting here makes the board better.

Its littoral....they only operate so far from the coast etc. As opposed to a Blue water navy, which is what we have. It means smaller ships etc. No carriers. They have alot of missile frigates but they don't have effective amphibious assault ships, which they'd need for Taiwan. They have a hard time with command and control and their guys do exactly what they're told..which is a problem if the plan goes off course. They are supposed to be building a carrier but i'm not sure if its normal or a one of those ramp jobs that everybody does. The Soviets don't even have normal carriers so thats a good idea of where we're at.

Good point.  It is.  If Bush I or Clinton was really selling out the american public, the adversarial Congress of the day would have pointed that out I think.

Not that I advocate the fact that folks are selling stuff..but worry more about suitcase nukes from Russia being sold to the nutbags as opposed to some of the stuff headed to china
