Not a bad decision at all for the 2006 Olympia.

Friday night, Ronnie was pretty big and had a good physique, but many of the photographers and writers had Ronnie beating Jay in the front round. Not all of them thought, but it was about 70% Ronnie to 30% Jay. By the end of the second round (or what we call the second round since they are combined now), Jay looked just as good, and Ronnie was tiring. Ronnie also was heavier that he was before.

It was a very big debate Friday night on Ronnie vs. Jay, many of us sensing that Jay might take the crown the following night on Saturday.

Satuday evening, it was Jay. Ronnie had a great performance, being Moses, coming from the audience, making the show quite exciting, but at the end, it was his back that lost it for him. Jay's back was better. Simply put.

This year should be a great show. Ronnie knows exactly what he needs to do to best Jay, but Jay is getting better and better. Let's not forget Victor Martinez either, and of course others..  But Ronnie will be 43. Can he get his back into the shape it was just 2-3 years ago?

1981 was the worst.  Franco should have been 3rd or 4th.  Apparently Arnold pulled a few strings for him.

i must confess my knowledge of the franco columbo wins is awful, i havent seen any pictures. but i have heard that he should not have won. anyone got pics?

And who do you think should have won in '80 ::) ::) ::)

mike mentzer, chris dickerson and frank zane all could have taken it. i'd go with mike mentzer as no.1 and chris dickerson no. 2

Here is an objective article I wrote on it:

http://www.bodybuildingpro.com/jaycutlerversusronniecoleman2006.html

Look at it this way: since 1983, the man with the best back has won the Mr. Olympia, and Jay had the best back in 2006.

good analysis but it seems way too biased towards ronnie.

and this comment just took the cake regarding the front abs shot:

"This is one pose that can really go either way depending on exactly what judging standard you use"

seriously that statement was a complete and utter joke to me (no offence).

Jay is usually the guy whos soft in the back. Why does everyone so sure he'll be 100% again?

It may seem biased at first, but what I meant is that Jay's abs are much better than Ronnie's, but Ronnie's lats have a better taper.  I would give it to Jay based on superior thighs though.  In 2001, I would have given it to Jay instantly, but now I realize that having a dramatic taper in that pose does help, and you can't deny Ronnie's lats have a lot of flare when he hits the abs and thigh!

i confess, you're point on the taper is not only interesting but very valid (something i never thought so much about before cos i am normally so focused on the abs).

i dont know, its just ronnie looked wierd that year.

i gotta say though, after reading ur analysis i did realise that jay is blocky, before i thought it was just the haters, but on certain shots the 'fridge' element is evident.

Menzter only had conditioning, he had no chest, good arms and average everything else. He was not Mr. O material.

It's obvious you like Jay cause anyone who knows what a Mr. Olympia should look like would say Melvin should have won it.

Above anything, it seems like there should have been a few different Mr O's over the years. No one really dominated like Arnold in his time (except for 80, of course)

oh absolutely.

but the judges should award a title based on the merits of one's physique, not based on pity...
The real joke is that any self-respecting bodybuilder who tore a major muscle just weeks prior to a show would drop out of the show because they would know that it wouldn't be good for their legacy to go from Mr. O to 13th place...unless they were assured that they would win regardless of how shittty they looked.

Dorian had an amazing physique, but no one missing a bicep can win the Mr. O. Everyone makes a big deal about Ronnie's tricep, but compared to Dorian's bicep, it's nothing. I don't know how Shawn or Kevin or Flex or anyone else who took 2nd to Dorian during the 'one-arm' years ever put up with that travesty.

Perhaps Shawn, in retrospect, can speak on this.

The torn bicep is visible in exactly one mandatory pose. That does not make or break the show. Plus, people who were there will tell you that the show was over the second Dorian walked out  ;)

The true travesty was 2001 when Cutler was deemed superior in muscularity and symmetry to the fat cow Coleman, yet still lost  ::)

About the dumbest thing I've ever read. Front double biceps, rear double biceps, most muscular, side chest/biceps.

You're almost right about one thing. The show was over BEFORE he stepped on stage.

watch any mr. olympia post 93 and you'll see why yates won - he was bigger than the guys on his level of condition and in better shape that those bigger or as big as him.

one small bodypart ( his bicep) will not overcome all that much.

samething with ronnie.

if he was in shape this year, he would have won - even with the tricep.

the back is a different story.
