Ronnie compared to strong men.
« on: July 22, 2007, 05:18:34 PM »
This topic sometimes comes up and a lot of people respond with "Ronnie would get owned in contest" and talk like this.  I think that is a very cheap way to discuss the topic.  The guy in the pictures is from the same city as me and came fourth in Ontario's strongest man contest.  His max deadlift is 750 and max bench press is around 475.  Ronnie is clearly stronger than him and has greater endurance.  With that, why would it not be realistic for Ronnie to perform extremely well in these types of events?  I'm not saying he would win the WSM contest, but I think it's safe to say he would excel at any strength contests with very little training.  Lastly, I would like to see any of the WSM competitors get through Ronnie's "Unbelievable" workout.  They may be stronger in some ways, but would they have Ronnie's endurance?  Doing the maximum lifts for one set is one thing, but let's see them do it for two hours.  I think it's safe to say that no matter how you cut it, Ronnie is one of the strongest men to ever live, depending on how you are defining strength.  By the way, seven years later and no bodybuilder alive is even five years away from looking like this:

I think Strongmen would have better endurance and better strength actually.

Also you have to factor in the drugs he takes to. no?

It would be great to see him compete against Mariuz, Virastyuk, Savickas. If he could qualify in the first place. I think he would gas out early though.

You ever go to Home Depot or Ikea?  Ever buy something like a large wooden TV stand that you need to put together?  Assuming it's yes to both, ever notice that the long cardboard boxes they come in are difficult as all hell to carry and after carrying that shit a little less than half a block to your car in the parking lot you seem to be practically exhausted with your freaking biceps and shoulders about to fall off?  Functional strength comes to play in this scenario.

Personally, I think Ronnie Coleman has a lot of strength for simple movements involving weights, like a deadlift or even a bench press, but throw in a rock that weighs over 2-300 pounds into the equation and I think he will probably throw out his back.  Remember, when Franco Columbu competed in the 1977 World's Strongest Man competition where he ended up dislocating his knee in the 'Refrigerator Carry' event??

The words Ronnie and 'endurance' don't fit well together in a sentence!

The big guy gets out of breath just walking from the squat-rack to the bench-press.  Ronnie has never completed a technically-correct-rep in his life!  It is all about body-movement, half reps and ego lifts for this steroided freak!

Ronnie is a champion in this so-called sport, but that is where it ends.

Remember Ronnie on Jay Leno?  The infamous beach sketch?  Ronnie helped put bodybuilding back to the Neanderthal-era with that fun little piece!

Ronnie is big, dumb and always out of breath.  He is a Pro Bodybuilder not a Strongman!

I do as well. Better rounded athletes. To be fair, Strongmen training differs from bbing training.

Regardless, Ronnie is the fucking man at what he does.

Ronnie should not demonised for the part he has played in the 'dumbing down' of Pro Bodybuilding!

I blame Ronnies lower lip.  The way it hangs-down and quivers.  It makes him look retarded.  But hey, it is all genetic, right?

Ronnie got winded pushing that Costco cart in that one video.  He would get slaughtered in a strongman contest.

I don't think he came across as mentally inept in that sketch, but somewhat physically inept, i.e., musclebound.

At ronnies best [and most sauced] he might have had a chance, but not now. He simply doesn't have the natrual strength. Consider that Odd Haugen guy - isn't he 60? Of course he's not natrual, but his natrual strength combined with gear makes him a great competitor.

cool thread matt.

who knows?

ronnie is a legend and one of the greatest bodybuilders of all time. nobody can take that away from him and, despite what the haters may say, the man is all class. he does what he wants, lifts as big as he wants, gets as big as he wants and lives how he wants. you can tell by the way he conducts himself that he doesn't give a fuck what anyone thinks of him. the man is as true to himself as it gets.

with this attitude he has accomplished 8 mr olympias, financial wealth and has kept his integrity intact the whole way (you don't see ronnie doing g4p or kissing anyone's ass). he can go anywhere in the world and he has time and a smile for everyone. i have never heard a bad, hurtful or insulting word out of this man's mouth.

he has legions of bodybuilders, pro and amateur trying to copy and catch up to him. you might think his war cries in the gym sound lame or obtuse but how many pro and am bbers do you see now doing exactly the same thing. ;)

while others bitch and moan about their placings and deride their competition, ronnie has always gone and worked harder in the gym and TOOK his reward.

if all this makes a man seem 'dumb' to you then you must be a superhero or something ???

Haha you must have never seen him deadlift. Difinitely 'technically correct'. If you've ever actually seen WSM you will know they perform the deadlift with horrible form, jerking it around and allowing their backs to bend forward, far from perfect form because it doesn't matter as long as they lift it.

Regarding being out of breath, Glen Ross was damn fat and permanently exhausted but did damn well and qualified for the finals more than once. Fitness does not matter if you're performing 1 set per event over a few days. Glen Ross himself once said "this is world's strongest man, not world's fittest man".

And as for Ronnie simply ego lifting, what is WSM if not ego lifting?

You are gay.

I think it's safe to say they've all taken their fair share training enhancing shiz, even if they cut it out a few months before competing.

Ronnie, an incoherant and blubbering retard!

When the executive producers at ESPN viewed a videotape of Ronnie training at MetroFlex, the fait of bodybuilding for the next decade was sealed.  Yes that's right, Ronnie ensured that the mainstream would never see pro bodybuilding on tv screens anytime soon!

Ronnie is the personification of everything that is obscene about this so-called sport. At least that is what the executives at ESPN think!

Ronnie you are legendary for your cheat reps, retarded stares and rancid body odour. Thanks to you bodybuilding will never have mainstream appeal.  Looks like we are stuck with an audience of latent-homosexuals, freaks, loners and losers for the forseeable future!

absolutely, wsm competitors take a shit load of drugs. no secret there.

top wsm competitors take every anabolic available + stimulants like coke and meth + epo (if you are a potential strong man, please don't take epo unless you've got access to the best doctors and are medically supervised after use for at least 24 hrs - i'm talking hospital conditions with heart monitor and intravenous drip stimulating blood flow).

in the '80's many, incuding some top names like sigmarson and wilson, dropped dead due to this lethal combination, especially the stimulants.

some of these guys would use so much coke just for TRAINING that they would have to go on an intravenous drip post training because their appetite would be fucked from the coke for too long post training.

the reason for such a deadly cocktail of drugs lies with the contemporary events requiring great speed and endurance to go with the tremendous strength requirements.

makes for great viewing and better conditioned athletes but also for a very dangerous enterprise if you want to be a top competitor and actually make some money.
