Bells Palsy is a known side effect of IGF-1  :D

Belly's palsy is most often associated with damage to the facial nerve, around the stylomastoid formania in the skull.. First this cranial nerve exits the brain out of the IAM, gives off a bunch of branches, most importantly the Greater Petrosal Nerve which controls taste of a portion of the soft palate and lacrimation of the nose, palate and pharynx, and the Chorda Tympani which supples taste to the anterior 2/3 of the tongue.. Eventually it pierces the parotid gland and gives 5 branches... Temporal, Zygomatic, Buccal, Mandibular and finally Cervical, these 5 branches supply muscles of facial expression and are what Vinny most likely has damaged. (Assuming he does in fact have bells palsy) Id be interested to hear if you have any other symptoms Vin? Hyper-accusis? Loss of taste sensation in the front of your tongue?

What antibiotics are you on? Have you seen a Neurologist?

Isn't Bells Pallsy Chronic?

I don't think there is a cure.  Some kids I know get it sporadically.  Can't be from tick bites all of the time.

Sandra, the term bells palsy is just a "fancy" term for facial paralysis.. It can either be chronic (due to a multitude of causes: recurrent tumors along the path of the nerve, meningitis, stroke, DM, chronic infectins... etc) or acute due to actual trauma of the facial nerve like I had mentioned and i see most often than not in the OR. I didnt really read the entire post (I tend to do that on these boards)...

However, it is true that both lyme disease and herpes zoster virus can also cause Bells Palsy, a simple blood panel can show lyme-specific antibodies/ HSV and i assume that is what Vinny had done.

Keep in mind, various illness dont always have to have 1 cause, but in the case of Vin's condition, assuming he has caught the Lyme disease early, he should make a full recovery... and Id highly doubt any other factors (IGF-1 use etc) have any role in this..

I'm right there with you about skimming some of the posts on GetBig.

I understand that here are different ways to get different illnesses.  The only cases that I personally know of are of the kids that I know.
They are siblings and for them it is chronic.  Very sporadic, can go being fine for years, the BAM!  The mom has told me the physicians basically let it play out.  No meds involved.

Thanks for your input.

Sandra- Sadly, treatment is a matter of controversy, as is the origin of this in many cases. Depending on which doctor you go and see, the treatment could be totally different.. There really is no "cookbook" method to treating such an illness. In patients presenting with incomplete facial palsy, treatment may be unnecessary, and you are right it may go away on its own.. Others require facial nerve decompression, antibiotics etc... It really depends. Tell your children George Clooney, had it in his early childhood, so certainly it hasn't stop him from fame, or scores of women followers!

Vinny could have competed at the NOC last year and made some money. Instead he stayed loyal to the NPC and continued on the same path he's followed the last 15 years.

Vinny will be back, & he will continue to do well in the NPC & eventually the IFBB.  Setbacks happen but he's doing the right things & it's just a matter of time.

This isnt about money....it's about a quest, a goal, about finishing something you started and credability.

Vinnie made the right choice, win, lose or draw...whether he makes it to the pro level or not.

I always thought the quest of competing at this level was to become a pro and earn a living doing what you love.

Am I wrong in this?

Why put your health and money to such extremes to not win but lose or draw?

Everyone wants to win...thats a given, and the spirit of competition.

The goal becomes "being the best" on a given day...accomplishing a goal.

For those of us who werent lucky enough to be overnight sensations...as the years move by, and you come so close you can taste it...the goal shifts to winning what you set out to win...a national level show.

I know for me....I could have never competed as a pro, and been perfectly happy that I FINALLY won...and was the best...and would forever be etched in history with those that won before me.

I'm quite sure Vinny's thought are very much like my own were...
