I've thought about this a lot lately, as I've watched every Giants game over the past week, and here's my take.

Barroid is a GREAT PLAYER...an all-time great player. Period. Take away the drugs and he's still a 600+ home run guy with all those walks. He would have probably 4 (maybe 5) MVP's, which would still be #1 all-time.

Hank Aaron admittedly used greenies (amphetamines). If that isn't a "performance enhancing" drug, what is???? Guys get beat down during a 162-game season (plus spring training). It's impossible to be hyped up every day. Aaron has admitted that he used a DRUG to ENHANCE his performance.

So, people want to look at JUST BONDS when it comes to drugs but just dismiss the use of GREENIES by Aaron, Rose, etc.? Why? Because it's much more talked about today due to TV and radio coverage? Aaron used a PERFORMANCE ENHANCING SUBSTANCE. Period.

So, if you want to crusify Barry for doing whatever he has done, does that mean that Aaron using AMPHETAMINES is just swept under the rug? It doesn't matter? You don't considering it "cheating" because it didn't allow him to play longer at another level, like growth hormone?

The bottom-line is that players in MLB have been using "Performance Enhancing" drugs for DECADES. Period. Barry simply adapted to his time, just like Aaron and those before him.

The Bonds incident involved Ron Kittle and a meeting Kittle didn’t enjoy with Bonds at Chicago’s Wrigley Field in 1993. Kittle hoped to auction a signed Barry Bonds jersey at a golf event, with the proceeds being given to a children’s charity. Kittle has written a book, “Ron Kittle's Tales from the White Sox Dugout” and included Bonds reaction to being asked to autograph a jersey which would benefit needy children.

"I paid about $110 of my own money for them, so they could be auctioned off at the golf outing. I did that all the time for stars like Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Derek Jeter and Roger Clemens. When I tell them how their autographs help the cause, every player gladly signs — with one exception.

I walked up to Bonds at his locker in the Wrigley Field visitors' clubhouse, introduced myself and said, "Barry, if you sign these, they'll bring in a lot of money for kids who need help."

Bonds stood up, looked me in the eye and said, "I don't sign for white people." If lightning hits me today, I will swear those were his exact words. Matt Williams and other Giants were in the room and they heard what Bonds said.

I stood there for a minute, and the veins in my neck were popping. I've only been that mad a few times in my life. I was going to beat the (heck) out of him, really kick his (butt), but Williams saw what was happening, so he came over and got between us. Matt said, "Ron, that's just the way he is."

I said, "White guys aren't the only ones who get cancer," but Bonds had turned his back on me and walked out of the clubhouse. Somebody must have run in and alerted Dusty Baker, who was the manager of the Giants then.”

And this has WHAT to do with Bonds breaking Aaron's record, as Aaron was an ADMITTED CHEATER, as he used AMPHETAMINES for YEARS?

mantle was one of the greatest athletes ever, but he ended his career a drunken asshole w drug-addicted kids.  If you weren't semi-literate, you might have read that somewhere.

Mantle is universally recognized as a very good guy,  ::)  Its not like he refused  to help cancer stricken kids because he was a racist like Bonds.

WTF kind of point are you trying to make, sirtraps?  Everyone knows Bonds is an asshole . . . it's why the media hates him.  That doesn't change the fact that he's a great ballplayer.

and you've already demonstrated you don't know shit about baseball players w your mantle comments.

thank you for that site. Those who don't follow baseball need to realize that Bond's has always been a home-run hitter. Also, I find it funny how people are quick to blame steroids yet ignore the fact that athletes typically get better with time. I know this sounds far-fetched but maybe, just maybe Bonds improved his timing and swing. But what do I know? He's only been playing for over 20 yrs. ::)

yeah, a lot of people around here childishly believe all men were created equal (ol' elephant ears Adonis is the most vocal about it).

If people look at events like the Tour de France, it's patently obvious that some men are just freaks among freaks.

ullrich, landis, vinokourov, rasmussen . . . all the men who've chased Armstrong for years have been busted for using drugs (which is more than you can say about bonds or armstrong, although I'm not saying they didn't use) . . . but  none of them had a serious shot at catching him for seven years.

and yet we have getbiggers believe that people like bonds and armstrong are "all drugs."

barry's competition is not Mantle or Ruth or Williams . . . they were from a different age. his peers are people like A-Rod, Pujols, McGuire (500 ft hitter), and Sosa . . . canseco . . . fielder . . . They have access to the same "technology" . . . and they sure as hell haven't hit 73 HR in a season yet.
