« on: August 04, 2007, 09:09:17 PM »

he's entering his best "power" years, and he has remained remarkably injury-free.

my guess would be he will end up in the 800 range.

true he has been durable up untill now but i would guess in his later years he will break down a bit and have a couple sub par years.  averaging in the 50 hr range over another 10 years would be pretty remarkable if he could do it.

yeah, 1000 is probably not going to happen, but he's got a good shot at it . . . which is more than you can say for anyone else.

800 would be incredible.

I wouldn't rule out 1000 being possible.  Sports medicine is advancing.  And he has the money and resources and motivation to pre-empt any injuries, and fix any he does incur.

Nobody is hating him now..

I would laugh my ass off if he opted out at the end of this season and told the hotdog eating goomba yankee fans to go and fuck themselves.

I hope he stays though and the yankees win the world series.. It's amazing how fragile this guy's fan support is, despite him being a great player and an even better guy. Even many dominicans dislike him, probably because he doesn't act the stereotype.

I love the guy. I wish we were related.  :-*

Most of the venom directed at him is because he signed the biggest contract in sports history.

If he opts out of the biggest contract in sports history to make more money, it will only get worse.

A contract extension is likely the best case scenario for both sides.

No way. He may hit 800. No guarantees even on that number though. People forget that the cheater Bonds picked up the pace to a marked extent at 37. Absolutely blowing his best previous home run years out of the water. Even though Alex is way ahead of Bonds pace at this point it is extremely unlikely that at 37 A-ROD will have the years Bonds had at that age. Most likely his production will be on a somewhat downward spiral. This is assuming A-ROD stays healthy.

I really get the feeling its in both sides best interest to get the deal done. Who knows with that maggot Scott Boras though. >:(

Averaging 50 home runs per year for 10 more years? What are you smoking?

Modern sports medicine is a wonderful thing.  A-Rod has the cash to have replacement joints bought from needy homeless men, should he choose.

Here is what this thread would have looked like in 2000......

Will Griffet hit a 1000 HR?

he's entering his best "power" years, and he has remained remarkably injury-free

oops! Bonds will finish in the 800s I would guess so A-rod will have to average 40+ a year for the next 8 years....

gotta love life

nobody would have guessed back in the late 90s that it would be bonds who would break the record and griffey would break down.

That's what happens when you double your homerun production from one every 16 at bats to 1 every 8 at bats.

not everyone's blue chip right out of the gate.

BB, you can pull out all the stats in the world, but that's not going to change what I think about Bonds.

I've had the good and bad fortune to participate in sports at a pretty high level . . .  but bonds launching 440 ft moon-shots w his unorthodox swing is something else entirely.

I've participated in sports at a level.  Not sure if I'd call it high or low.  :)

I'm not trying to change your opinion about Bonds.  I'm mainly poking fun at you (and all of the Bonds supporters).  I've been going back and forth with one of my employees about Bonds for about the last month.  He's a big-time supporter.  Yesterday he gave me a list of Bonds' achievements.  Very impressive.  Yes he was a HOF player before the drugs.  I do believe, though, that without the sauce he does not pass Hank Aaron.

From 1986 to 1998 Bonds averaged 31 home runs per year. From 1999 to 2006 not counting 2005 when he didn't play Bonds averaged 47 home runs per year. If he had averaged his 31 home runs he averaged his first 14 years of his career he would have 635 home runs today not 756.

I hear Griffey doesn't believe in working out.

Yeah, he said he never lifted. He had immense god given talent. Too bad he had so many injuries like hamstring pulls etc...

i'd say the level was pretty high.

speculating about the sauce will get nobody anywhere.  ruth played in all-white leagues . . . a whole different game.  Hank aaron used speed . . . and are you willing to bet that the durability of the great pitchers today has nothing to do with artificial enhancement?

the bottom line is a 400+ ft HR is a 400+ ft HR.  the same greats still remain if you use that bottom line.  Ruth, Mantle, Williams, Aaron, Bonds.
