Army denounces 3 articles written by GI

The army says the stories aren't true, wow is that a PR mistake, I've already watched videos that don't exactly show troops on good behaviour... This Army statement will bring everyone with a video forward.  Not smart on the Army's behalf.  The fact is, of course things like this happen.  You're not going to find a war where things like this don't happen.  It's perhaps the biggest reason why war should be used for last resort imminent threat kind of stuff and why war should not be waged to liberate people from themselves, oh hell, but isn't this obvious, why am I saying it ::)

Have you heard of this guy named Matt Sanchez? He was a Marine reservist who tried to make a name for himself by blasting the Columbia student body for being violently anti-military. Naturally, conservative media latched on to the story like leeches and it turned out that the guy was a former GAY porn star and gay escort.

He has re-invented as a journalist who reports from a military perspective, even though he has never really seen battle and has been a reservist his entire military career. He was under investigation for financial fraud and violating the "don't ask/don't tell" policy, but that was swept under the rug because he writes pro-right, pro-military propaganda.

He's the main guy that the Army is citing as a source debunking Beachamp's story.

You realize he said he made it all up right...Hell some of the stuff he said is just physical impossible. The "Army" didn't out him either. It was fellow soldiers who knew what he was saying was BS. He's a piece of shit and the New Republic should have vetted him before publishing. New Republic is still trying to say that they are sticking by their story, despite the author saying he lied. Oh yeah...he's married to a NR staffer. Make of this what u will.

TNR has a different account of events:

Quote
Here's what we know: On July 26, Beauchamp told us that he signed several statements under what he described as pressure from the Army. He told us that these statements did not contradict his articles. Moreover, on the same day he signed these statements for the Army, he gave us a statement standing behind his articles, which we published at tnr.com. Goldfarb has written, "It's pretty clear the New Republic is standing by a story that even the author does not stand by." In fact, it is our understanding that Beauchamp continues to stand by his stories and insists that he has not recanted them. The Army, meanwhile, has refused our requests to see copies of the statements it obtained from Beauchamp--or even to publicly acknowledge that they exist.

Scott Beauchamp is currently a 24-year-old soldier in Iraq who, for the past 15 days, has been prevented by the military from communicating with the outside world, aside from three brief and closely monitored phone calls to family members. Our investigation has not thus far uncovered factual evidence (aside from one key detail) to discount his personal dispatches. And we cannot simply dismiss the corroborating accounts of the five soldiers with whom we spoke. (You can read our findings here.)

There was no official recantation from him. All of those blogs are crediting one anonymous source.
