ANYONE ON GETBIG HAVE A CAREER IN PHARMACEUTICAL SALES?
« on: August 13, 2007, 09:34:40 AM »
I was pondering a possible career change. Is anyone or does anyone know someone who is in this line of work?

Good experiences?

Bad?

Any comments or opinions are most certainly welcomed. Thank you! :)

My ex-fiance is a rep. She made close to 80 her first full year which was 2005. She likes it, but has to work 60 to 70 hours a week, has to wait in doctors offices a long to see them to "push" her product. Plus, she had to relocate to a certain area within 3 months to keep her job(don't ask me why?) She does get a company car, but no company expense account. I would imagine if you are the type of guy who doesn't mind working all the time, it's not a bad gig.

Thanks, Danielson.

I'm currently in the mortgage business(on the side). We're losing lenders left and right. We just lost a big name stated income lender today that I thought was bulletproof.

I'm thinking a possible domino effect with all of our big name lenders in the near future, especially with the democrats breathing down their necks. It's getting scary and I've been doing this for 6 years. Makes me think I should consider an alternative career.

We have lost virtually all of our subprime lenders. SISA, NINJA, and even stated loans may be done with, at least in my state. I can't tell you the number of people I put into arms a few years ago and now they owe more than the house is worth and they are fucked. I never saw it coming, but at the same time it makes me sick that good people are going to lose their homes because I didn't have the foresight to put them into a 30 yr. fixed cuz I wanted to double dip them. The mortgage future looks bleak for sure, but the best will survive, maybe not thrive like we did between 2002 and 2005, but it should be ok. I am currently trying to buy a quarter car wash not necessarily to change careers or anything, but because even the brokest of people need to wash their cars, but I have put two bids on 2 different properties and both got denied. Oh well, keep trying I guess.

Do you intend to stick it out? Mortgage refinancing, that is?

Yep, I love the hours :) Seriously though, I am single, no kids, no pressure really. If I have a bad year or two, it's not a big deal. If it doesn't bounce back sooner or later, who knows. Worst part is I can't re-fi my PR cuz I can't get it past an appraisal review. I might have to bite the bullet and put down 30 k or so to get it done, cuz i like to re-fi it 4 times a year and pay myself 3 points on the yield :)

Yeah, if you're single then it makes it easier. When you're married, got a kid on the way, the pressure begins to mount. These days, I feel like I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop with this negative publicity the sub-prime market is getting.

In any case, I think it's a good move on my part to consider another career just in case. Pharmaceuticals doesn't sound like a bad route to pursue, provided you are good enough to be hired. Good stable salary to fall back on, along with good benefits. I'll keep chugging along in the mortgage industry, waiting for it to get better while looking into this alternative avenue.

Thanks for the comments, by the way.

i got out of the mortgage biz for that reason..of course i was single at the time...i worked for a sub prime lender that went from the mountaintop to the toilet in a little of 9 months..i know 3 or 4 people that start to sweat each year when the industry takes a shit...

i'm in career change mode now...myself...although i am terrified of sales jobs.

drugs maybe?

(ps:  Hi buffbodz, how come you don't go on the girly board no more?  we're missing pretty much everything (including you...

thought I'd step out and about and read other boards and find people.  That female forum we attempted is seriously flagging.  Can you come back and help out?  STella is pretty much on her own there.

I've been a Bmore region Pharm tech for about 7 years. Although not a drug rep I've met and seen quite a few.  They make good $$$ and usually don't work to hard.  CVS has lost a few pharmacists to go be reps.

get out of real estate if you like money (atleast for the next 5 years)

pharmaceutical sales has typically been one of those something for nothing too good to be true jobs.  It is really feast or famine, if your company has a new drug that is really popular you will make a lot of money; when that drug becomes generic in 4 years or so of good times you will be fired if you're not the top seller.

But doesn't this line of work cater more to females than males? I would think it's easier to push the newest drugs on doctors if you're an attractive female than some guy in a suit,
especially with male doctors.

Opinions on that?

Pfizer only hires young hotties and has them spend a lot of money to wine and dine the doctors.   Other companies are less selective.  If you don't mind being treated like garbage by the staff and having to suck up to people, go for it.  The pays not bad, the benefits are very good i.e car etc.

A better bet for a guy would be something like cardiac stents, orthopedic hardware, etc., instead of pharmaceuticals.

When you're latest, greatest, super-drug is Viagra, what would you expect?
Besides, it's always easier to get the appt when you're a woman.

I've met and seen countless drug reps.  How many were male?

A big fat zero.

They need both good looking males and females, female reps to males, male reps to the ladies. Wine and dine, free samples, gifts etc etc.

No expense account? Screw that.

Bodi is right, it is a job where higher placement is a plus, but travel and work hours are a minus (for some)
