Chinese Executive Kills Self Amid Recall
« on: August 13, 2007, 12:17:05 PM »
BEIJING (AP) -- The head of a Chinese manufacturer whose lead-tainted Sesame Street toys were the center of a massive U.S. recall has killed himself, a state-run newspaper said Monday.

Cheung Shu-hung, who co-owned Lee Der Industrial Co., committed suicide at a warehouse over the weekend, apparently by hanging himself, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

''When I rushed there around 5 p.m., police had already sealed off the area,'' the newspaper quoted a manager surnamed Liu as saying. ''I saw that our boss had two deep marks in his neck.''

Though the report did not give a reason for Cheung's apparent suicide -- and the company declined to discuss the matter -- Lee Der was under pressure in a global controversy over the safety of Chinese made products.

This month, Mattel Inc., one of the largest U.S. toy companies, was forced to recall 967,000 plastic preschool toys made by Lee Der because they were decorated with paint found to have excessive amounts of lead. The toys, sold in the U.S. under the Fisher-Price brand, included likenesses of Big Bird and Elmo, as well as the Dora and Diego characters.

Days later, Chinese officials temporarily banned Lee Der from exporting products. The Southern Metropolis Daily, citing unidentified Lee Der workers, said the recall cost the company $30 million.

The recall was among the largest in recent months involving Chinese products, which have come under scrutiny worldwide for containing potentially dangerous high levels of chemicals and toxins.

Chinese officials, eager to protect an export industry crucial to China's booming economy, have aggressively tried to shore up international consumer confidence by cracking down on makers of shoddy goods, crafting new regulations and stepping up inspections.

In one of the more bizarre cases, a court in Beijing on Sunday sentenced a reporter to one year in jail after he pleaded guilty to faking a television report that showed migrant workers making meat buns stuffed with cardboard for sale.

The report, concocted by freelance reporter Zi Beijia, fanned fears in China and abroad about China's poor food safety record. The report appeared on national television and was widely seen on the Web site YouTube.

In the Lee Der suicide, an official who answered the telephone at the company's factory in the southern city of Foshan on Monday said he had not heard of the news. A man at Lee Der's main office in Hong Kong said the company was not accepting interviews and hung up. Telephones at Foshan's police headquarters rang unanswered.

Cheung was a co-owner of Lee Der, according to a registry of Hong Kong companies. The other owner, Chiu Kwei-tsun, did not return telephone messages left for him.

In its report, the Southern Metropolis Daily said Cheung, a Hong Kong resident in his 50s, treated his 5,000-odd employees well and always paid them on time. The morning of his suicide, he greeted workers and chatted with some of them, the report said.

After the recall, Lee Der maintained that its paint supplier, Cheung's best friend, supplied ''fake paint'' used in the toys, the Southern Metropolis Daily said.

''The boss and the company were harmed by the paint supplier, the closest friend of our boss,'' Liu, the manager, was quoted as saying.

In announcing the temporary export ban against Lee Der, a government quality inspection agency also slapped a similar prohibition on Hansheng Wood Products Factory and said police were investigating both companies' use of ''fake plastic pigment.'' Such pigments are a type of industrial latex used to make surfaces smoother and shinier.

Hansheng made wooden railroad toys that a New York company, RC2 Corp., sold under the Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway product line. RC2 had to recall 1.5 million of the toys earlier this year because of lead paint, which can cause vomiting, anemia and even neurological damage.

Chinese companies often have long supply chains, making it difficult to trace the exact origin of components, chemicals and food additives.

Dag!   :-[  That's messed up.  This is one of the things that scares me with the way the US is trying to catch up with the world (specifically the oriental countries) with respect to education and the level of achievement.  It's too stressful.  It's sad that this man left a family behind.   :-[  My prayers go out to his family.

It's about time we had some corporate accountability.

Via suicide?

I've stated this on here before, but I think that there would be the same types of problems here if America had a manufacturing industry left.

The guy who put the anti-freeze in the cough syrup was actually put to death.

Meanwhile, the Times ran two interesting articles related to China's recent bad press.

The first was about American toy makers experiencing a dramatic bump in sales in the last few weeks. They seem to be under the impression that it's the beginning of a trend. I couldn't disagree more.

The second was about Chinese officials cracking down on the media.

Calm down you angry little man. According to this article, it was not Lee Der's executive who was responsible,
it was the paint supplier, ...although Mr. Cheung took ultimate responsibility for the fraud.

If you are like me, then you don't know why lead is added to paint, but you just assume that it is some type of filler that stretches it like paint thinner.

Today, Slate posted an article that details the  near-magical properties of lead.

It causes paint to dry faster, it's more flexible, it results in a brighter, more enduring color and it's more resistant to fading and damage. It's anti-corrosive and it also resists mildew. Lead causes paint to adhere better to metals and it is far cheaper than organic coloring agents.

However, as we all know, lead is extremely dangerous. According to the article, lead content in paint was considered a luxurious selling point during the early part of the 1900s. Federal regulations limit lead content to about half of 1% now.

You hear how polluted 1/4 of China's waters are? Black goo pumped into blacker goo thats supposed to be a river. Lead is probably the safest thing in there.

From someone who lives and works in China (Suzhou . The garden city)  You would not beleive how polluuted this country is.  Smog ditry water,  People pissing and shitting on the street. Gardens watered with raw surage.  A wonderful place.  Oh and it's all about making money and not giving a fuck about how you do it or step on in the process.

Don't let Jag read this. She'll tell you she lived in China for awhile and that she bathed in the swamps and it was not polluted at all.

I would not say that at all. I have not been to China, ...but many of my colleagues have.
I am well aware of the problem of pollution in China, ...extremely well aware of it.

I would infact tell you that my company's CEO recently went to China, holding some very high level talks with Chinese officials while demonstrating how remarkably well our products work to clean up emissions from automobile exhaust, ...reducing vehicular emissions from 431,000 parts per million to 131, right before their very eyes (and with only one treatment) ...but I'm afraid I would be accused of spamming. {sigh}

Pollution in China is a big problem, and with the eyes of the world about to be focussed on Beijing next summer during the olympic games, chinese officials are desperately seeking ways to improve the air quality so they can showcase their country in a positive light. I know a great solution, ...but I'm not saaaaaying.  :-X

The other day on BBC America, they did a story about how China is trying to clean up the country in time for the Olympics. One plan is prohibiting half of the cars in the country from driving on any given day.  The reporter said air pollution is so thick there that you can actually feel it in your throat. Officials are worried the poor air quality is going to affect the athletes and cast the country in a negative light.

I don't know if removing half thew cars will work.  Alot of the problems lie with the factories I feel and the fact that China uses dirty coal.
Here in Suzhou we can have a clear day and the next the smog is so thick you can't seee 50 meters.  Chinese people themselves complain about the pollution, but really do little to help their own cause.

In a country where it's everyones dream to make it rich, there can be little acccountabilty some times.  I have traveled through third world regions of Africa, where they don't do some of the things I've seen done in China.  In Suzhou it's a real contrast between beautiful manicured gardens, and polluted canals, dirty streets and dirty air.

My solution is far superior, doesn't involve killing anybody at all,
and may even help them to both save money AND make money at the same time.

I can't come out and tell you what it is.  :-X   If you want to know what it is, ...you'll  have to PM me.  :)

I've traveled to a lot of countries.  Chinese are interesting and different to say the least.

Of all the asian people the Chinese are the most bizzare by far.

The old women hork and spit, like sailors. They'll push you out of the way to get on the bus, butt in line, I'm sure that has to do with all the people they have over there. They all drive the most expensive BMW's, Mercedes but can't drive to save their lives, don't even ask them to parallel park, it's the funniest thing you'll ever see, the younger ones have an addiction to speeding. They LOVE to gamble. Don't even get me going on the "food" they eat. I'm not sure if it's Cantonese or Mandarin but one of those two languages sound like razor blades being thrown at your ears.
