I used to fight in Tae Kwon Do tournaments and I'll be the first to admit that against someone who knows how to fight its total garbage, but against the average guy who has no clue, it was very effective.  My best friend went to UW Madison, and him and some other buddies were always talking shit at parties, getting into fights, and letting me clean up the mess.  I only weighed 200 lbs at the time and I kicked the shit out of alot of guys much bigger than me.  The fights always went the same way.  A solid kick to the sternum followed by a few good shots to the jaw and the fights were always over in less than a minute!!!
:D ...oh brother.. ::)

I do not want this to be a pissing contest. Just relating some things I have seen growing up and heard about, that's all. Just a personal view.

A skilled street fighter will always have the advantage over most martial artist. A skilled street fighter has learned, at a very young age, to fight himself out of a phone booth, back against a wall, doorways, narrow hall ways and other tight areas. Most martial artist need space to operate in. When they learn to fight as well in a phone booth, as an open space, than they are real fighters. And the majority of their fighting/matches are held in a controlled dojo setting. Most street fights only last a max of 5 to 20 seconds. If any one has the bad luck of meeting a good street fighter be aware of the leather sap or a lead filled 4 to 6" pipe he may be hiding. Even a 5 ounce wooden dowel is deadly.

Thai boxer, in my view, have a advantage over the pure martial artist. Kick boxers next in line. One thing about the martial arts, those joint locks, strikes, leg sweeps, submission holds, etc take quite a few years to perfect. And even than they may not be applied correctly in a real street fight. Aikido comes to mind as does Ninja training with regard to years of learning time.. There is an old saying that a good wrestler will always beat a good boxer. For the most part, I believe that.

I've never fought in a phonebooth!!  Good post though.  I've been taking some cuts here for saying that the fights i got in usually were over in less than a minute, but anyone who's ever been in a real street fight knows thats how it goes.

wasn't going to enter this thread (for obvious reasons - bbers talking about fighting is like golfers talking about playing tennis)but i was bored and this post is spot on.

fighters fight. they don't drill, practise, wear pyjamas, say prayers, do kata, show respect to imaginary gods or wait for readiness.

put it this way. if you were going to war with another country would you want to take soldiers that have fought before or soldiers that have been training for war.

another analogy? you don't become a tennis champion by practising the backhand. ;)

piss away. ;D
