LIST OF SAFE, AMERICAN-MADE DOG TREATS
« on: August 23, 2007, 10:48:20 AM »
Anyone have one?  After looking at my dog treat stash, I realize a lot of it comes from China!  I would like to have a list of safe dog treats made in America if anyone has one.  If not maybe we could list some in this thread?

A couple that seem to be safe:

Greenies
Canidae Nutritional Gourmet Snap-Biscuits

If anyone knows differently please say so.  Also Flower and Vet, if any that I post are just trash, please say so.

Please add to the list!

Thanks!

This site apparently updates lists of safe foods/treats:

STella - be careful with Greenies, I don't think I would get them:

  http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/02/14/dangerous.dogtreat/

The problem comes because the treats, called Greenies, become lodged in a dog's esophagus or intestine and then some veterinarians say they don't break down.

A CNN investigation uncovered 40 cases since 2003 where a veterinarian had to extract a Greenie from a dog after the treat became lodged either in the animal's esophagus or intestine. In 13 of those cases, the pet died.

but that could happen with just about anything right?  especially with an "inhaler" (as opposed to a chewer).

In case anyone out there gives their dogs rawhides (which is not a good idea), but in case you do...
Make sure they are made in the US.

yes, dogs have even choked on kibble, but the other problem is with blockages in the intestines from them, they don't always digest it appears:

The problem comes because the treats, called Greenies, become lodged in a dog's esophagus or intestine and then some veterinarians say they don't break down.

"I know they are marketed in saying that they do digest. Certainly the ones that we've taken out, esophageal or intestinal, that have been in for days are still very hard," Brendan McKiernan, a board-certified veterinary internal medicine specialist from Denver, Colorado, told CNN.

Are there any telltale signs to know if something like that became lodged in an intestine?  Would the dog still defecate normally?

(thanks for the links)

 I don't and wouldn't feed Greenies.   ;D

But it does appear that they don't always digest like the manufacturer says they will, so people should be aware of that.

Greenies recommends owners check that the treats are chewed and Joe Roetheli - who launched the brand as a treat that can freshen a dog's breath and clean its teeth - said it was important to pick the correct chew for a particular dog. There are 7 different sizes to choose from depending on the size of the dog.

I would not feed my dog a greenie for all the  reasons listed above.  All the vets where my girl works say that while they probably ARE ok, they wouldn't feed them to their dogs.
