Screen actors guild... It is a card that is for actors and actresses. They help you find work if I am not mistaken... After I was in the movie "Lucky you" last year with Drew Barrymore I about when down and got my SAG card for working purposes but now we live in Idaho and there isn't much acting going on out here.  ;D

It's the union.  They don't help you find work but in order to work on a union picture you must have a SAG card or be a must-sign or be working under Taft-Hartley.  It used to be kind of prestigious to have one.  SAG is very strong and really lookout for their members.

When Jesse Ventura failed to get the support of fellow wrestlers to unionize so that they could (among other things) buy health insurance in bulk at a discounted price, he began a film career in order to get that card and the coverage that came with it.

Onlyme,
Do SAG benefits cover spouses and children like those plans offered through most conventional employers?
And what are the current requirements to maintain membership – dues, camera time, lines, etc?

Then shit, maybe I can get one!

Actually I was a member from 85 to 95.  I was stupid and just quit paying my dues.  I wasn't working anymore since moving here.  I had medical benefits up till the end.  I could have kept my medical benefits for just $60 a month.  But, I figured I would never need them.  So I have been out of the loop for along time.  I did just look at the SAG site and found out I have some residuals owed me but they won't tell me how much.  I don't have a card anymore but could easily get one and probably will when I get back to the mainland and get back into shape so I can work.  I have plenty of friends who would put me to work to be eligible for a card.

Yes they do or at least they used too and probably still do.  If you make a certain amount you get covered and if you make another amount they will take care of your children.  I am sure that is still how it is.  They have Blue Cross.  I never used it once when i had it.  I rarely ever even got a cold.  Now since the spider bite I am happy I have insurance.  The only requirement is the have a base amount you make in a year to qualify.  I have no idea what it is.

Also, I think the guys who wrestle on TV are members of SAG.  Back then they had AFTRA but now I think if you are SAG you get AFTRA automatically but not sure.  They even have an Extras Guild now which is unreal.

What benefits do you get from having it these days?

One thing about SAG is they do protect the members.  If you have any grievence you can call them and they will resolve it.  One of the reasons I got black balled in the stunt business is because the guy who got me into it did something to a friend of mine I didn't like. Like always, I have to back up my friends instead of thinking about myself and it cost me A LOT of work and even A LOT more money.  But what I did ended up stopping a production and cost the production company a lot of money and my ex friend a lot of grief.  But it did get my other friend paid at least.

I know if I stayed in LA and pursued my acting career I would be doing very well in it.  I had many contacts and made a lot of friends.  But, hey I did what I did and moved here.  Still had a good time living in paradise.  Now back to the grind on the mainland

Yes SAG benefits do cover spouses and dependents, however it is on a pro-rated basis.

If it works anything like the Canadian union ACTRA, the extent of your coverage is dependent upon how often you work, as well as how much money you make.

Under ACTRA, everytime you work, a small % of your income 3% goes towards insurance & retirement.
Obviously, the more you work, and the money you make, the bigger your 3% will be. That buys you more insurance coverage.

Under ACTRA we used to have 8 levels of coverage: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. Level 7 covers spouses & dependants.
If you're unmarried, and at level 7, you could request to be downgraded to level 6 coverage. There was no out-of-pocket cost for the insurance, it came from your 3%'s as well as employer contributions. The only time you had to dip in for coverage is if you didn't work enough in the previous year to qualify, ...they would allow you to make a payment to keep the same level of coverage. It was actually pretty good. It covered just about everything OHIP didn't... which wasn't much. It covered eyeglases, prescriptions, chiropracters, and also covered dentistry as well including what most considered cosmetic dentistry (teeth bleaching). Last year, they changed it from an 8 tiered system to a 3 tiered system of bronze, silver & gold.

Most SAG members can't meet the minimum threshold. When Hilary Swank won her Oscar for 'Boys', 2 weeks later she was trying to get a prescription filled, and they informed her she hadn't worked enough for it to be covered. No joke.

SAG & AFTRA have been trying to merge for years, but there are those who work steadfastly to prevent it.
It sucks for the members because their dues, as well as their benefits are split between 2 unions, and as a result, they don't end up qualifying for benefits in either union. In addition, having some shows shot under SAG contracts and other TV shows shot under AFTRA contracts screws with your pay expectations as well. SAG always ends up undermining their own agreements by signing SAG contracts on TV shows, but agreeing to AFTRA rates, just to get jurisdiction, ...while AFTRA fights to retain jurisdiction. The Screen Extra's Guild is defunct, and has been for years, they were absorbed by SAG many years ago.

So Judy,
I know a lot of films are shot on location north of the border. How does that work then when American casts and crews work in Canada?
Do they have to join ACTRA to work on the Canadian set? Or is their U.S. union membership acceptable?

Sorry. I’m sure this is common knowledge to those in the industry, but this is how we learn.

I’ve always been a bit “fuzzy” on the whole international work thing anyway. A few years back, one of the Harts – I think it may have been Ross – told me that I would need a work visa (and a whole laundry list of other things) to work in Stampede Wrestling. Some of the stuff was mind-boggling. :-\

Most films shot up here are SAG/ACTRA signatory. What happens is depending on the talent, they will either work under a SAG contract or an ACTRA one (or in the case of British Columbia, a UBCP one) (Union of British Columbia performers). Most often it is the ACTRA contract, with SAG rates applying. Production will most often try to maintain SAG rules re: turnaround etc., but basically in a nutshell, the actor gets his/her same rules & rates applying, ...but ACTRA has jurisdiction for union dues, and employer insurance, pension, & retirement benefits etc. In the case of a Cdn actor who's been living & working in the US for years, most often ACTRA claims them. Some actors depending on the length of the production and their involvement in it, will simply opt to acquire dual citizenship or landed immigrant status, and join ACTRA through the reciprocal agreement vis-a-vis sister unions, and not be subjected to non-member permit fees or foreign worker withholding taxes mandated by the US gov. At one point we lost a huge film over that. I think it was "The General's Daughter" if memory serves me correctly. They wanted to take the deductions off John Travolta's salary, as per the US gov, ...only to have him file for their return when doing his taxes. John refused wanting to keep his money from the start, not having to give it up, then file for it's return 6 month later, ...and the production stayed stateside. On his salary, the interest alone on the withholding for 6 months would have been a nice chunk of change. He also doesn't do overtime or weekends. His contract states he works M-F 9am - 5pm. Anything that can't be shot during those times, goes into another shooting day.

After the 6 month long commercial strike which stripped the SAG coffers dry, there was much talk about implementing a Global Rule one, ...but for the most part, that is only available to a very small handful of only the absolute biggest name stars whose contracts are so far above SAG scale that the SAG contract or any union contract isn't even applicable. Schwarzenegger could probably get a Global Rule one contract. I saw him move an entire production from Toronto to Vancouver at the last minute after 6 months of prep, simply because at the last moment he decided he didn't want to be in a different time zone from his kids, ...so after multiple millions of dollars in prep, location scouting, rental contracts signed etc., The 6th day went from T.O. to Vancouver. We only shot one scene in T.O. because they couldn't find an architecturally suitable substitute for Toronto's Eaton's Centre.  :-\

Well I sure have been out of the business a long time.  I guess a lot has changed.  Oh well.  I mAy get back into stunts when I get back to weight.  The guy who blackballed me is someone I grew up with.  When I lived in Vegas around 2000 he was there on Rush Hour 2 and called me to see if I wanted to work on that.  He double Jackie Chan and has been in every movie since that one.  He also duble Charlie Sheen, Tony Danza and Scott Baio and others i'm sure.  We'll see what happens.

Keith, when you stopped working, did you go on withdrawal, ...meaning you suspended your membership, because if you didn't, you might find yourself owing annual dues for the past 17 yrs, ...or they might have simply termintaed your membership. That being the case you'd have to pay the initiation dues all over agin and I hear it's now up to $1800.

For any actors or performers looking to join the union, I recommend you set aside a bank account just for that. in the USA, you can be Taft-Hartley for the first job, but after that you becaome a "must join" for the 2nd job, and if you are offerred your 'big break' but do not have the $1800 + 1/2 yr of dues set aside to join immediately, ...you cannot accept the job. That has been the heartbreak of many a struggling actor. Set the money aside until you need it, so you don't wind up in that position.

Initiation dues for:
  • SAG (Screen Actor's Guild) = $1800 + 1/2 year's member dues of $60
  • ACTRA (Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television & Television Artists) = $600 + $175 annual dues
  • AFTRA (American Federation of Radio & Television Artists) = ?? (not sure, not a member of AFTRA)
  • UDA (Union des Artists) + ?? (not sure, not a member of the French language union)
  • UBCP (Union of British Columbia Performer) = ?? (not sure, not a member)
  • A.F. of M (Musician's Union) = ?? (not sure, not a member)

Under ACTRA, if you are not a member, you must pay a permit fee to work on an ACTRA signatory show.
Depending on your job category, the permit fee's can ranch from $15 - $450 per day.

Those are just initiation fees. Theres also working dues, ...but those come off your paycheques when you work.

Hope That Helps,

Oh I know what Craft is... the Craft truck & the Craft table are like 2nd homes on set... next to your trailer.  :P

If they work transport or grip in Montreal... I probably wouldn't know them.
