Tribalism is found in all levels of human society, but religion, followed by nationalism or the more euphemistic term patriotism, are doubtless the most dangerous and threaten the very survival of our species. There are many things of merit in the USA but one thing that is very dangerous is the wedding of ancient mythology (Christianity) with modern ideas of national identity. The concoction one has after those ingredients are mixed is deadly.

I agree with you about religion.  However, being an American, I'm gonna stick with nationalism. Here's why... the world has limited resources, and is overpopulated relative to those resources.  Against this backdrop, the world is divided between "haves" (the west) and "have nots" (the developing world), and the difference in quality of life between these two groups is enormous.  Since my "tribe" is one of the "haves", I think I'll do whatever is necessary to make sure it stays that way, since as my "tribe" goes, so go I.

Then you do little to work towards building a durable civilisation. I am 'American' (my passport says so), but I have always found America is better at this and that rather noxious and silly. I am an individual and judge everyone else on that basis. One's nationality is not a factor for me. 'Haves' and 'Have Nots', if you regard this model as a necessary prerequisite for the world and how to live in it, then I suppose you will need some form of tribalism. A true individual needs none.

Truer words could not be spoken in this thread. Canadian or American, both countries are incredibly wealthy with standards of living far above many countries all over the world.

Each has their respective pros and cons (Canadians have the right to bear breasts while Americans have the right to bear arms). However, I believe that if many of the people not proud to live in either country were to be forced to live in a real third world country or one that is constantly at war, many would rethink what they have typed here.

Mate, I don't have a comfortable Western life style and have lived in Asia for a few years; I haven't changed my tune yet, mostly because I see live what tribalism does to people.
